Saturday's
Wild Game
Festival
PHOTOS/DIANE COSGROVE
Hondo residents flocked to the fair
grounds to enjoy great food and en-
tertainment at the 49th annual Wild
Game Festival. Some of the vol-
unteers throughout the day were
(clock-wise from top left) wild hog
cooks Randall Taylor, Jimbo Am-
berson and Doug Samford; Prissy
Hutto prepares carne guisada, and
Sandi Steubing overseeing “Chiken
Chit Bingo”.
Wild Game Dinner
offers fun, food,
fundraising
By Sonia Garza

The 49th annual Wild
Game Festival and Din-
ner took place Saturday at
the Medina County Fair-
grounds, with meats in-
cluding wild hog, white tail,
fallow, watusi and venison
chili, carne asada, and wild
game sausage with seven
different animals in it... just
to name a few.
Brett Hutto, along with
the Chamber of Commerce,
organized this year’s event
to benefit the 4H club. “The
chamber asked me to do it
four years ago. It’s a lot of
work, but it’s good,” he said.
“I enjoy it because it bene-
fits the kids and that’s what
I do it for.”
A line quickly formed to
grab a plate of wild game.
“Last year we had fried ze-
bra,” laughed Cliff Reed. “I
liked it. I thought it was real
good. It wasn’t gamey at all.”
There was also a silent auc-
tion, benefiting the children
of HANK (Helping Abused
and Neglected Kids). This
was the first year that HANK
would benefit from the
event. “Diane Cosgrove, one
of our directors, arranged
for us to be the beneficia-
ries of the silent auction,”
co-founder John Southwell
said proudly. “We have quilts
and even a Fossil purse. All of
the proceeds from the silent
auction are going to HANK
to help the kids.”
Although this was the
first time Southwell had at-
tended the event, for many,
it was their third or fourth
time. Rudy Tovar, from
Mountain Home, said what
keeps him coming back is
the “food and friends.”
One couldn’t attend
without noticing the huge
wooden box holding an 8
ft pizza, adorned with 50
pounds of wild game. “Last
year the cooker was on site,”
Hutto said. “But this year he
cooked it at the corn maize
and built a box to bring it
over.” Built to feed at least
300 people, everyone was
able to take a free slice.
The event was also filled
with fun activities such as
a horseshoe tournament
and even chicken poop
bingo. A salsa contest was
held for the first time this
year, giving local residents
the chance to sample hot
sauce while listening to the
music of Keith Lutz. Traci
Koch took home the award
for best mild, best hot and
judge’s choice. Phillip Lange
won best medium and peo-
ple’s choice went to David
Buckley.
Some were still skeptical
of the food, but they did not
go hungry. The funnel cake
stand provided a safe haven
for those who were unable
to muster up the nerve to
try the wild game.
