Hondo makes quick work of PI in area playoff
By Bobby Ainsley
Special to the Anvil Herald
Ingleside -- Another solid
team effort, with a twist of re-
venge, propelled the Hondo
Owl volleyball team past the
Port Isabel Lady Tarpons last
Thursday evening for a straight
set win, 25-17,25-22,25-20.
Port Isabel eliminated the
Owls from last year’s postsea-
son, so the Owls had extra mo-
tivation as they loaded the bus
for the three-hour trip south
to Ingleside. Hondo continues
to use a balanced team ap-
proach which has kept the first
two playoff opponents on their
heels. PI made Hondo earn the
victories, with some of the lon-
gest rallies of the season, but
the Owls were up to the test and
remained calm, playing solid
ball in every aspect of the game.
The match opened with Hon-
do in control of the serve. Mad-
dy Ainsley opened at the line,
and the Owls jumped out quick-
ly, scoring the first two points of
the set. Ainsley passed to Jordan
Oefinger, who set Ashley Poole
for the first point. The same trio
teamed up again, this time with
Oefinger getting the kill. After a
quick side out, Hondo showed
its balance, when Reagan Luce
and Kaelyn Ralph got into the
act. Ralph scored off an Ains-
ley set, and Luce hammered a
kill and blocked a PI attack for
a point. Libero Hannah Ytuarte
was solid on the back row, dig-
ging attacks and serves alike.
Hondo extended its lead to 12-
4, forcing a PI time out. That did
little to stem the tide, as Hondo
continued the high level of play.
The teams traded side-outs, but
PI never threatened in the first
set. They used their second time
out at 22-16, but Hondo closed
the set on a 3-0 run. Ainsley
teamed with Kyrsten Gibson
for a block and Luce recorded

The second set opened with
a long rally, which ended with
Oefinger going to Ainsley, who
set Luce for a kill. The next two
points were some of the longest
rallies of the night and season.
PI upped its intensity, but the
best they could do was tie the
score at 6. The Owls remained
calm and regained control.
Oefinger, Gibson and Ainsley all
recorded kills through the mid-
dle of the set, and PI called time
out. Gibson was at the service
line and her teammates contin-
ued to play everything. With the
score 17-9, Ainsley offered an
ace and the Tarpons used their
final time out. Coach Russell
McElroy worked his subs into
the final part of the set and they
closed out PI, taking a com-
manding two-set lead.
Coaches often worry about a
letdown when a team jumps out
to a two-set lead, but Hondo re-
moved any doubt, opening with
a 6-0 run to open the third set.
Poole recorded a kill, followed
by an ace from Ainsley, back-
to-back PI errors, and a second

Winners of eight out of their first nine contests, the Hondo JV came up
way short in its final contest of the year last Thursday, falling to Devine, 44-0,
at Barry Field. The Owls conclude the year with a mark of 8-2.
Freshmen
Hondo took the early lead last Thursday at Barry Field, driving to the
5-yard line after the opening kickoff against Devine. Garrett Van Damme
booted a 22-yard field goal to give the Owls a three-point lead, but the rest
of the afternoon belonged to Devine, as the freshman Warhorses rolled to a
44-3 win. The freshman Owls ended the year with a 1 -9 record.

[ Hondo Junior High Football
Hondo’s junior high football teams ended the 2013 season with a trip to
Devine. The seventh grade won its two contests, while the Hondo eighth
graders dropped their games.
8th Blue: In the first half of Thursday’s eighth grade Blue game, both
Jordan Gomez and Andrew Ramirez recovered fumbles. The Owls moved
the ball between the 10’s but could not punch it in the endzone. Jacob
Theis, Jordan Gomez, Isaiah Quintanilla and Josh Fernandez all ran
the ball hard, behind the blocking of Caleb Neuman, Chance Post, Lee
Keilman, Marcus Garcia, and Joseph Frausto. Fernandez and Quinta-
nilla completed passes to Devon Andreozzi and Joseph Luna. In the
second half, Fernandez stripped the ball from a Devine running back and
returned it 70 yards for a touchdown. The defense was led by Fernandez,
Jason Olivarez, Andrew Ramirez, Diego Garza, Gomez, Caleb Neuman,
Torin Nolan and Joseph Luna. They finished with a record of 3-5 and a
district record of 2-3.
8th White: The Owls fought hard in a 30-0 loss. Ricky Frost, Jacob
Essenburgh, Cade Weynand and Dedrick Ytuarte had some good runs.
Ytuarte connected with Juan Guzman on a 20-yard completion. The de-
fense was led by Weynand, Joe Bader, Antonio Urias, Noah Benavides,
Ryan Pope, Pond Garcia and Grant Schultz. They finished with a record
of 1 -4-2. In District their record was 0-3-1.
7th Blue: The Owls completed a 5-1-1 season and an undefeated District
season with a 36-14 victory over Devine. In the first quarter, Cole Frazier
stopped a Devine drive with a tackle for a loss. A few plays later Alex Magers
connected with Frazier for 35 yards. Isaiah Velasquez ran a reverse for a first
down. Gabriel Frausto then scored on a seven-yard run. Majors scored the
conversion on a run. In the second quarter, Carlos Lewis recovered a fumble.
Magers connected with Frazier again for 32 yards. Frausto scored on a 10
yard run, and Magers threw to Kolten Lentz for the two-point conversion. Also
in the second quarter, Frausto scored on a 55-yard run. This time, Bridger
Prince ran in the conversion. JR Arthur sacked the Devine quarterback late in
the half. Frausto returned the second half kickoff 68 yards for a touchdown,
but the two-point try failed. Jonathan Flores recovered a fumble. In the fourth
quarter, Frazier connected with Will Gardenhire on a 10-yard touchdown
pass. The two-point try failed. The offensive line of Paul Gonzales, Jared
Trevino, Marcus Velasquez, Joshua Flores, Jonathan Flores, Colby Alvarez,
and Carlos Lewis did a great job of opening holes. The seventh grade Blue
team finished with a district record of 4-0-1.
7th White: The Owls’ seventh grade White team came away with a con-
vincing 24-12 victory over Devine. The Owls led at halftime, 8-6. Robert Martin
scored on a 50-yard run. Ryan Graff’s two-point conversion try was good.
In the second half, Martin scored on runs of 55 yards and 20 yards. Both
two-point conversions were good, on runs by Gage Crisp and Jacob Dyall.
The defense was led by Robert Martin, Kendall Willman (caused fumble), Jon
Vinton (recovered fumble), Gabriel Flores, Austin Dickens, Graff and Trace
Lackey. Jacob Rodriguez, Crisp, Martin, Graff, and Dickens ran the ball hard.
The White team finished with a record of 3-3-1 and 2-2-1 in district.

After the Owls’ opening point

lowing a Hondo side out, the
Lady Pirates went on their first

point margin stayed fairly con-
sistent all the way to 22-15, when
R-F scored the final three points
of the set to make the score look
even more one-sided than it was.
In the second set, the Lady

run, but did little to slow the
Owls. They maintained the five-
point advantage throughout the
set. Hondo closed out the set
and match when Ralph passed
to Oefinger who set Gibson who
found an open spot on the floor.
The win gave Hondo its first
area championship since 2008
and set up a regional quarterfi-
nal match with Rockport-Ful-
ton on Tuesday.
Kyrsten Gibson had a pair of kills
and Oefinger followed with an
ace to cut R-F’s lead to 21-20. Af-
ter another side out, a kill from
Reagan Luce brought Hondo
back within 22-21. The killer
came when the Owls dropped
the point at the end of possibly
the longest rally of the night. R-F
went up 23-21 and took the last
two points to win the second set.
Hondo took a lead of 5-2 in
the third set, and held the ad-
vantage up to 9-7, when the
Lady Pirates swung the mo-
mentum back in their favor,
taking a 12-10 lead. The score
was tied at 12 and 13, before
R-F scored four straight to go
up 17-13. They managed to
take it to match point at 24-17,
before Hondo managed one
final never-say-die rally. The
Owls’ longest rally of the night
brought them within 24-22, but
the Lady Pirates recorded the
final point, ending the match.
