Woolls Intermediate
School honored veterans
Monday, Nov. 11. Students,
service members, faculty,
and families gathered by the
flag pole to celebrate local
veterans. Students invited
service members to attend
and be recognized at the
event. The honorees’ names
were read aloud, while the
‘escorting’ student present-
ed them a gift and thanked
them for their service.
Woolls Intermediate mu-
sic teacher Krystal Marchese
prepared two songs for the
event, “The Star Spangled
Banner” and “God Bless
America”, which were per-
formed by Woolls students.
Marchese also read each
veteran’s name during the
presentation. Hondo ISD
Superintendent, Dr. A’Lann
Truelock, was also present
for the event and was glad
to see the students creativ-
ity on display. “I feel very
proud our students take
such an interest in honoring
our veterans,” Truelock said.
Woolls G.T. teacher, Ju-
lie White, and her students
had a special presentation
for the Tex Hill Wing of the
Commemorative Air Force
(CAF) during the celebra-
tion. White’s students vis-
ited the organization in Oc-
tober and were inspired to
help out. They organized a
penny drive and collected
$1300 for the Tex Hill Wing
CAF. Tex Hill Wing leader,
Col. John Gibeau, said they
had no idea the students
had collected so much.
“What a wonderful thing
Mrs. White is doing with the
G.T. class, helping out the
community,” said Gibeau.
Col. Don Woodham, Tex Hill
Wing CAF Operations Offi-
cer, said the CAF’s mission
was to reach out to the com-
munity and remind people
of our history, and Mrs.
White’s class is helping to
achieve that mission. White
was also excited about her
students’ work, “I am over-
joyed with the generous
donation the entire school
put together. I am proud of
my students for wanting to
give back to their commu-
nity. They did in-depth re-
search on the history of the
military branches, which
inspired them to want to do
more for the veterans of the
Tex Hill Wing.”
Woolls Intermediate sec-
retary Deedee Guedea was
appreciative of all the hard
work the students and vol-
unteers contributed to the
ceremony. “Thanks to Mrs.
Marchese, the students at
Woolls Intermediate and
everyone who worked to-
gether to make this a very
special day. They did an
awesome job!”
Reminder: pick
up veterans’
photos at Anvil
Herald office
In anticipation of last week’s
special salute to veterans sec-
tion, many in the community
entrusted to us their photos
of military veterans from their
family. We are so grateful for
them, as we could not have
put this section together with-
out community input. It is our
hope that our efforts in recog-
nizing our American heroes in
uniform galvanizes the public
to remember their sacrifices
and honor them.
It is now time to come to the
Anvil Herald office and retrieve
these photos.

Winner named in poster contest
By Jeromy Kusch
Anvil Herald Reporter
Hondo High School senior,
Andres Morin, was greeted
in his art class on November
11 by Hondo Area Cham-
ber of Commerce President
Glenn Klaus and execu-
tive director Holly Schlortt.
The two visited the class to
award first place to Morin as
the winner of their first an-
nual Shop Local Campaign
Poster Contest. The theme
for this years’ competition
was “Get it in Hondo”.
Upon receiving the honor,
Morin said, “I feel accom-
plished, it’s awesome.” Morin
took pictures around town
to gather inspiration for the
project. He was drawn to
Hondo’s history and agricul-
ture and emphasized both in
his design. Morin also high-
lighted local businesses, even
including small details like a
poster of John Wayne’s movie
“Hondo” in front of his depic-
tion of the Raye Theatre.
Klaus said the concept for
the competition came from
the desire to have a fresh look
for the shop local campaign,
encouraging residents to
shop in Hondo, and support
their local businesses. Klaus
liked the idea of having high
school students working on
the project because the stu-
dents are not professional
artists. The annual competi-
tion would encourage new
ideas and brings attention
to the high school art pro-
gram. Hondo High School
art teacher Philip Miller was
contacted by the chamber
and facilitated the project at
the school level. Klaus said
Miller really got behind the
project and the students
came up with some great
designs.
Schlortt said Morin’s pic-
ture was chosen because,
“it captured the essence of
the slogan, it was organized,
and had good detail.” Both
Schlortt and Klaus agreed the
judges were impressed with
the quality of all the artwork
submitted. Two local artists
were asked to judge, Shannon
Terry and Debby Bodenchuk.
Thirty-three students sub-
mitted designs, and three
were selected for recognition.
The winner, Morin, will see
his artwork displayed in a va-
riety of ways for the city, and
received a $100 gift card for
any local business he choos-
es. Honorable mention went
to HHS senior, Cody King,
and the President’s Award
went to junior, Vanessa Meza.
Both King and Meza received
gift cards to Raye Theatre.
The Chamber of Com-
merce worked with Hondo
High School, the public li-
brary, and the Hondo Art
League to organize, display,
and judge the annual compe-
tition. The art submitted for
the project will be on display
in the Hondo Public Library
until the end of December.
