Oscar C. Hairell Sr.
Oscar C. Hairell Sr., age 84
of Yoakum and formerly of
Devine, passed
away November
9, 2013, at his
daughter’s home
with his family at
his side.
He was born ,
May 9, 1929, in j
Yoakum. In 1947,
he graduated
from Yoakum
High School and
began working
for Southwest-
ern Bell Tele-
phone Company
in October 1947.
He spent his entire working
career at Southwestern Bell
(43 years) before retiring.
He married Kathryn Searle
in Alice Dec. 5, 1950. They
lived in Devine for a num-
ber of years and raised their
three children there. He was
a member of Masonic Lodge
and Eastern Star for 55 years
and a Master Mason for 57
years. He was also a member
of the Telephone Company
Pioneers.
Survivors include his wife
of 63 years; children, Annette
Otremba and husband, An-
thony of Spring Branch, Oscar
Hairell Jr. and wife, Malindaof
San Marcos, Elizabeth Love
Oscar C. Hairell Sr.
and husband, Michael of Der-
by; 9 grandchildren; 6 great-
grandchildren;
sisters, Ruby
Ford of Edna,
Lillian Kopecky,
Amye Schlinke
and brother, Wil-
burn Hairell and
wife, Betty, all of
Yoakum; and nu-
merous relatives.
He was pre-
ceded in death
by his parents,
Ollie D. and
Amelia Kuen-
stler Hairell; two
brothers; three
sisters and a great-grand-
daughter.
Visitation is tomorrow
(Fri.), Nov. 15, 6-8:30 p.m.
at First United Methodist
Church of Yoakum, 1026 East
Gonzales Street. Funeral ser-
vice will be 10 a.m. Saturday,
Nov. 16, at First United Meth-
odist Church, Yoakum. Inter-
ment will be in Mission Burial
Park South in San Antonio at
3 p.m. The family suggests
memorials be made to the
Fisher House at Lackland Air
Force Base or the Benevolent
Fund of The Order of the
Eastern Star.

Rev. Fred E. Martin
Reverend Fred E. Martin,
age 69, passed peacefully sur-
rounded by family into the
arms of his Lord and Savior
November 9,2013.
He was born July 25, 1944,
to Edward and Cleo Homesley
Martin in Hondo. He grew up in
a family of farmers and ranch-
ers in Yancey. He graduated
from Yancey High School, at-
tended Uvalde Junior College,
then graduated from South-
western University in George-
town before going to St. Paul
School of Theology in Kansas
City, MO., where he earned his
masters of divinity.
He married Janice Hale Feb.
25, 1967, and faithfully served
Southwestern Texas Confer-
ence of the United Methodist
Church in various Texas locales
and as Kerrville District Super-
intendent retiring in 2011.
He loved the Lord and his
family; he found joy in serv-
ing and ministering to other
people, meeting others’ needs
before his own, and was pas-
sionate about helping people
know and love God. He en-
joyed farming and ranching
in retirement and enjoyed the
outdoors, hunting and wildlife.
He was a 30-year member of
Rotary International.
He is survived by his wife; son,
David Martin and wife, Jennifer
of Denton; daughter, Jana Jones
and husband, Evan of Plano;
grandchildren, Cullen, Brady
and Slayden Martin and Kyler
and Harper Jones; sister, Mary
Lee Welsch of Bastrop; brother,
Homer Martin and wife, Florrie
of Carrizo Springs; sister-in-
law, Jane Martin of Hondo; and
numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death
by his parents; brother, Oliver
Martin; and brother-in-law,
Bill Welsch.
Graveside service was Nov.
12 at San Geronimo Cemetery.
Bishop Joel Martinez and Rev.
Keith Wyatt officiated, followed
by a celebration of life service
at First UMC, Seguin, with
Reverends Keith Wyatt and Bon
Welborn.
The family suggests memo-
rials be made to First UMC
Seguin or the charity of one’s

James L. “Sandy” McDon-
ald, age 72 of Hondo, went
to be with the Lord Novem-
ber 9, 2013.
Born Aug. 25, 1941, n
Poteet, he was the son of
Van E. and Orilla E. Gray
McDonald, who preceded
him in death, as did his son,
James Harlan.
He was a home construc-
tion contractor. A quiet
man, he enjoyed hunting
and fishing, and visiting at
the “College of Knowledge.”
He is survived by his wife
of 41 years, Donnie D. Lit-
tleton McDonald; daugh-
ter, Renee Dougherty and
husband, David of Devine;
daughter, Kim Reed and
husband, Cliff of Hondo;
son, Hal H. “Holly” Petty
and wife, Debbie of Devine;
grandchildren, Nikki and
Heather Petty of Devine,

home with his

days after his
70th birthday.
He was born
Nov. 2, 1943, in
San Antonio. In
1961 he gradu-
ated from St.
Louis Catholic
High School.
He worked with
Butterkrust
Bakery for many
years. For over 30 years, he
was a sales representative for
Labatt Food Service.
He was a lifelong member
of St. Louis Catholic Church,
member of the St. Louis So-
ciety and Quihi Gun Club.
On July 18,1964, he married
Judith “Judy” Haby at St.
Louis Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife
of over 49 years; children,

Sam Strunk, age 65 of
San Antonio, passed away
November 5, 2013.
He was born on Easter
Sunday, March 28, 1948,
in Edinburg to Burdette
Phelps Strunk and Verda
Jones Strunk.
He served in the U.S.
Navy and fought in the
Vietnam War.
He is survived by his lov-
ing wife of 43 years Carmen
Lutz Strunk; son, Ronald
Strunk and wife, Cynthia;
granddaughter, Kennedy
Strunk of Adkins; brother,
Gary Strunk and wife, Sis-
sy and Brett of Mountain
Home; and numerous niec-
es, nephews, in-laws, and
many loving family members.
Funeral service was Nov.
9 at Finch Funeral Chapel
in LaVernia, with Pastor
Royce Smith officiating.

listed in the
U.S. Navy at the
young age of 16,
with his father’s
signature. He worked for the
San Antonio Water Board for
over 40 years, retiring as a
maintenance and construc-
tion supervisor.
He was a member of St.
Louis Catholic Church and
the St. Louis Society.
He married Vivian Rose
Hutzler, who preceded him
in death in 1994.
He was also preceded in
