He currently serves as the
chapter’s vice president.
Mason has, for the past
three years, been instru-
mental in organizing a
Parliamentary Procedures
team and has served as its
president. The team has
done an outstanding job
at the state conference and
has just fallen short of ad-
vancing to the national lev-

Last year Mason also
competed in an individual
event, Legal Office Proce-
dures and placed first at
the state level, advancing
him to National’s that was
held in Chicago, IL. This
was a great learning expe-
rience for Mason and was
instrumental in his deci-
sion to run for state office
this year. Mason looks for-
ward to the many leader-
ship opportunities that
await him this next year.

Local scouts plant trees at Lost Pines
By Jaxon Meeks
Special to the Anvil Herald
On Saturday, February
23, Boy Scout Troop 471
teamed up with Lost Pines
camp scout leaders on a
mission to plant 400 pine
trees.
Pine beetles and the
drought killed a lot of our
pine trees in Lost Pines,
the place where we go to
summer camp each year.
Mr. Ernie Lerma, Mr. Jim
Taylor, and Mr. Vincent
Biediger helped by going
up several weekends and
clearing the area by cutting
dead trees down, chipping
brush, and operating camp
tractors.
When we got to Lost
Pines, the camp rangers
taught us freshmen how
to plant trees. Then we
started planting 400 pine
trees. Some boys shoveled
the dirt, while other boys
planted the saplings.
After some trees were
planted, some freshmen
got a tour of Lost Pines. It
was cool to see all the stuff
they had at Lost Pines. After
the tour, we planted the rest
of the saplings. Then it was
time to go back to the scout
hut. We gathered all our
equipment and headed out.
It was cool to help out
the environment and take
a tour of Lost Pines. I hope
summer camp will be just
as cool!
We would like to thank
the US Forest Service for
all of their advice and for
donating the trees!
Scouts who went were
Brendan Carty, Noah Pena,
Matthew Persyn, Seth and
Jonathan Basinger, and
Jaxon Meeks. Brendan
Carty’s sister, Rihan also
went to help. Adults were
Tara and Brian Meeks, Ron
Brown and granddaughter,
Lupe Pena, Steve Persyn,
and Ernie Lerma.
