The Spirit of Hondo, a C-47, lifts off on a maintenance flight from STRA in Hondo.
Vintage aircraft returns to sky
After more than six years
of restoration, Karl Ritter’s
vintage World War II C-47, re-
named The Spirit of Hondo,
took off on her second main-
tenance flight last month
from South Texas Regional
Airport in Hondo, where
she’s hangared. For mechan-
ics Jake White of San Antonio
and Mike Meier of Freder-
icksburg, this day was a long
time in coming.
On the project since 2009,
White is ecstatic over the
progress and expects the third
and final maintenance flight
to take place this month.
The C-47 (comparable to
the commercial DC-3) was
built in 1945 during World
War II as a support aircraft,
and this particular one actu-
ally served both the U.S. Army
Air Corps as well as the Royal
Air Force (Britain), then was
based in Canada for a time,
before returning to the states.
Ritter purchased the warbird
in Alice, where she had been
since she was taken out of
service as an international
freight carrier following the
advent of NAFTA (North
American Free Trade Agree-
ment), which made trucking
freight more economical be-
tween Mexico and the U.S.
Christened The Spirit of
Hondo in 2009, the plane
has not flown in years due to
mechanical problems. White
plans to begin restoring the
interior to her original con-
figuration once the mechani-
cal issues are out of the way,
installing litters like the ones
these type of aircraft had for
transportingwounded troops,
as well as parachute seats.
After passing her third
maintenance flight, Ri tter and
the crew took the C-47 out
for their first cross-country
flight, landing in Fredericks-
burg to pick up fellow pilot
Chuck Beasley, then flying to
San Marcos to celebrate with
a steak dinner. They returned,
dropping Beasley back in
Fredericksburg before land-
ing again at home in Hondo.
Ritter plans to take The Spirit
of Hondo around to various air-
shows and fly-ins in Texas. Pilot
is Cliff Walker of Austin, who
used to pilot the CAF’s Bluebon-
net Belle, and co-pilot is Richard
Pulley of Fredericksburg.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
YOUR TURN
CSCOPE changes overdue
Dear Editor:
After the Jan. 31 hearing at
the state Capitol on CSCOPE,
led by Senator Dan Patrick,
many of us as private citizens
who tried to dig out the truth
about CSCOPE and who were
vilified for our efforts were vin-
dicated, because the evidence
presented proved we were
right all along. Since the hear-
ing, Sen. Patrick has pushed for
the following changes to take
effect immediately:
• All future meetings of the
TESCCC Governing Board will
be public with all the respective
notice requirements being met.
•TheTESCCC will begin a j oint
review process of all CSCOPE
lessons with the SBOE.
• Amendment of all Terms
of Use Agreements, signed by
both teachers and districts, re-
moving civil or criminal penal-
ties associated with the release
of CSCOPE content.
• Clarifying that all teach-
ers and districts may post all
CSCOPE lessons that they
deem necessary.
• Ending the non-profit
501(c)(3) arrangement that in-
corporates CSCOPE.
• Initiating the posting of
CSCOPE lesson content to
their public website.
• Creating a standing curricu-
lum review panel, comprised of:
parents, teachers, school admin-
istrators, members of the SBOE
and TESCCC board members.
CSCOPE is notifying all par-
ticipating school districts that
lessons are not intended to
be taught verbatim, and un-
til CSCOPE lessons can be re-
viewed through a collaborative
process with the SBOE and TES-
CCC, districts are strongly en-
couraged to review all lessons at
the local level, to ensure they are
appropriate for their students.
Sen. Patrick and his commit-
tee should be commended for
their investigative work and
the legislative move to reign in
CSCOPE. What is more impor-
tant is that parents, grandpar-
ents, and interested citizens
begin standing up for our chil-
dren and making their voices
heard locally. Our children be-
long to us - not the state.
