The 1978 Sustaining Fund total
exceeded the previous year's amount
by more than $20,000. At the time the
campaign closed, $100,569 had been
received in payments and pledges.
Mr. George Crews, president of South-
west State Bank in Brownwood, served
as drive chairman.
James B. Franklin, Vice-Pres-
ident for Development, emphasized
that the sum came from gifts from
Brownwood and the Brown County
area and did not include gifts from
alumni and friends living out-side the
local area. "Scores of local citizens,
staff and faculty members, and mem-
bers of the HPU Student Foundation
worked to make this drive one of the
most successful in recent years, and
the entire university family joins Dr.
Brooks and me in expressing our
deepest gratitude for this continued
support," stated Franklin.
Brooks' European Tour
Dr. Roger L. Brooks, president of
Howard Payne University, has an-
nounced that he will host a twenty-
three day tour through seven Euro-
pean countries June 16 to July 8.
Major historical, cultural and literary
points of interest will receive em-
phasis. Among the cities to be visited
are London, Amsterdam, Heidelberg,
Salisburg, Innsbruck, Lucerne, Milan,
Venice, Florence, Rome, Geneva,
Nice, Grenoble and Paris. A day-long
Rhine River Cruise, relaxation on the
French Riviera, and shopping times in
London, Rome and Paris have been
properly spaced throughout the busy
tour for leisure and recuperation.
Dr. Brooks will lecture throughout
the tour and will give emphasis to
English and American literature with
European settings. The lectures are
open to all members of the tour, and
those who are interested may obtain
three or six semester hours of univer-
sity credit by registering prior to de-
parture at Howard Payne University.
The cost of the tour is $1399 a
person. Cost is based upon double
occupancy in pleasant first-class hotels
with private facilities and includes
all transportation, continental break-
fast and dinner, accomodations, de-
signated sightseeing tours, transfers
and portage.
Further information and reser-
vations may be made by writing Dr.
Brooks at the president's office of
Howard Payne University or by calling
915/646-9321. As the tour is limited to
40 people this year, reservations will
be accepted on a first-come, first-
served basis. A deposit of $100 is
required to secure a reservation.HOWARD PAYNE UNIVERSITY
