College adds office
administration programs
Collin County Community Spring Creek Campus in Plano.
College has added several new cer-
tificate programs in medical and
legal office skills, offering students
more ways to upgrade their skills
and canting power as they continue
their education.
Now students in the Office
Administration Program may earn
certificates in eight areas, including
word processing, and legal and
medical office support.
The programs are a good way for
students to quickly retrain to spe-
cialize in an area now in demand,
said I hula Thompson, professor of
office administration. Students are
finding increasing job opportunities
in the medical and legal office
areas, she added.
Many students progress through
several certificate programs on
their way to an Associate of
Applied Science degree, she said.
That allows a student to obtain an
official certification of their skills -
and boost their earning potential -
at each level. The office support
area, for example, offers entry,
mid-level and advanced certificate
programs.
The medical office support pro-
gram has grown to include three
certificates; entry-level medical
office support, medical administra-
tive assistant and entry-level medi-
cal transcription skills. A course on
insurance coding has also been
added.
Classes in office administration
are available during the day and
evening at both the Central Park
Campus in McKinney and the

Squeeky pets get the grease
^^ver the past several
I lwccks, my children
have developed quite
an interest in insects. I had
hoped the premature demise of a
little cricket my-fivc-year old
named “Whiskers" would have
satisfied her urge to lake in bugs
that were down on their luck, hut
apparently not.
After the unfortunate Whiskers
incident, my daughter's tempo-
rary adoptee was quickly fol-
lowed by a few more crickets, a
crippled lady bug and an assort-
ment of inodis. I was a little con-
cerned at first, but eventually
chalked it up as an educational
experience that was both time-
consuming and cheap entertain-
ment.
I first became acquainted with
my daughter’s latest discovery
when she plopped him down on
my computer keyboard to “help”
me work. As the little caterpillar
fnuitically inched along the keys
searching for a way home, I
couldn't help but smile. Even
though it had been a bad day, I
had finally found someone who
had it a lot worst th;ui 1 did.
At first the little guy didn’t
have much of a personality, but
after being rescued repeatedly
from the clutches of an eager
two-year-old, “Squeeks" and 1
began to develop quite a rapport.
Over the course of the afternoon
Squeeks experienced life as a Bar-
bie pet, tooled around the house in
a doll stroller and joined us (from a
great distance) for a quick bite of
lunch. I had to intervene on the
afternoon's festivities, however,
when the kids pulled out their
markers and began decorating him
for fall.
Several hours of hanging out
with children under the age of six
must have taken its toll because
Squeeks began to look a little
green. When my daughter couldn't
rouse him after his afternoon nap, I
suggested that the kids consider
releasing him from his duties or he
would end up like Whiskers the
cricket. ..stiff and boring.
Besides, I had warned them earli-
er in die day I wasn't cleaning up
any more of their messes, and you
know what a little time bomb cater-
pillars can be if they're not handled
with care.
"Ok, ok, lie’s leaving,” my
daughter said sadly, carrying his lit-
tle jar outside. “We were going
to have a birthday party for him
later, but I guess he'll have to
miss it. Good-bye little pet."
The ogre had struck again.
What kind of mother would turn
someone out on their birthday?
“A party, huh'.’ Boy. that sounds
like fun," 1 chirped. “I’ll bet
Squeeks could go to his party and
then go home afterwards. How
'bout that?”
My kids' squeals of excitement
and bobbing pig-lails clued me in
that it was party time. “Hey
Mom. where is Squeeks? He was
here a minute ago,” my live-year-
old asked, desperately shaking
the jar. “Awwwww, he ran
away.”
Just my luck, I thought, he'll
probably turn up in a few months,
right about the time 1 discover a
hole in my best sweater. That’s
what I get for fooling around
with mother nature.
I never had the heart to tell the
kids that Squeeks turned up again
within a few minutes after he was
reported missing. There are
some things that’s just best left
unsaid and undiscovered.
Although I couldn’t be certain, I
suspected that crunch 1 heard
under my tennis shoe wasn't a
potato chip—we had run out of
those three days before.
