NEW YORK, lUly 1 (UP) —
Prematurely gray Jimmy Blood-

Ip the Philadelphia Phillies'
“flaming youth" movement, but
because Manager Eddie Sawyer
■a siaed him up long ago as a real
hustling, scrapping ball player,
he was responsible for them be-
ing back in first place today.
Blondworth came to the Phils
from the Reds ir a routine waiv-
er transaction this spring and
went to work only for utility
duty after his arrival. But there
is a lot more to the story than
that.
When Sawyer managed at To-
ronto in the International
League and Bloodworth played
for the Dodger farm club in
Montreal, the clubs became in-
volved in a terrific fracas and
Scrapper Jimmy was right in the
midst of it. Sawyer was an
“enemy" then, but he vowed that
if he ever got a chance to get the
first citizen of Appalacnicrila,
Fla., on his roster he would do

The hit climaxed a four-run
rally in which Brooklyn's two
are pitchers, Don Newcombe and
Preacher Roe were the victims.
Duke Snider and Gil Hodges
homered for Brooklyn and Mike
Goliat hit a homer for the Phils.
Jim Konstanty picked up his
fifth victory in a relief role.
The Cardinals took over sec-
ond place as the Dodgers dropped
to third. St. Louis made 14 hits
off I-efty Cliff Chambers to top
the Pirates, 9 to ,4 while in other
National League vams, the
Braves topped tile Giants, 8 to
4, on Sibliy Sisti’s grand slam -
homer in the ninth, and the Reds I
defeated the Cubs, 8 to 4.
In the American League, the
Yankees snapped Boston's seven-
game winning streak with a 9 to
ti decision, but the Red Sox re-
taliated by winning a 10 to 2 sec-
ond game in a day-night double
bill. Cleveland cut Detroit’s lead
to four games with an 11 to 3
triumph, while the White Sox
lopped the Browns, :t to 2, in 13
innings and the Athletics climb
ed out of last place by upsetting
Washington in both ends of a
double bill, 7 to (i, and 4 to 2. By (jRNE SARA/.EN

who was only four points hack
of Saucier's .349 a week earl-

managed only six hits in 34

At that he was in eighth place
among those going to but. 150
