Braves' Game At
Vernon Postponed
Because Of Rain
NEW YORK, May 17 HP—Frank
Shea, laughing, good-time boy of
the 1947 world champion Yankees
was making a joke Saturday of the
ancient baseball axiom that “they
never come back.”
Cast off by the Yankees two
weeks ago in their six-player deal
with Washington, the pudgy slider-
ball expert scored his third con-
secutive victory Friday night as
the Senators beat the Indians, 2 to
(1. Shea limited the Indians to two
hits — singles by Ray Boone and
Al Rosen — and now has permitted
only two runs and 13 hits in three | nowhere to
starting assignments.
Shea, becoming the fourth pitch-
er lo whitewash the Indians this
season, struck out nine and walked
five. With Shea showing the way,
the Washington pitching staff has
turned in one shutout, five one-run
games, three two-run games, and
two three-run games this month.
VERNON. May 17—A five-inch
rain caused postponement of the
Sweetwater-Vernon baseball game
here Saturday night.
It was doubtful if the two teams
would be able to play the second
aiid filial game of the series Sun-
day because of the heavy r ains.

BALTIMORE. Md., May 17 (IP)—
Arthur Warren Abbott’s Blue Man
got revenge for his daddy Satur-
day when he came roaring out of
win the 76th running
of the famed Preakness at Old
Pimlico by a rousing three and a
half lengths before 29,345 scream-
ing fans.
The favorite in a field of 10 clas-
sy three-year-olds, the Kentucky
colt who was a distant third in the
Kentucky Derby charged out of
the ruck under chill cloudy skies
to finish going away from the
longshot Jampol and the third
place One Count. And it was pay-
ment in full for the day at old
hilltop nine years ago when the
mighty Count Fleet humbled his
sire, Blue Swords.
For there were three of Count
Fleet’s sons in the pack that he
bested as he covered the mile and
| thre-sixteens in 1:57.4—one and
j two-fifths seconds oil' the
i mark set by Capot in 1949.
