I
vV^ylie has seen its fair share
of negativity in the past few
years but we think it’s time
we looked at some of our
positives. One definite
positive is the support we
receive from the Wylie Police
Department.
We would like to say that we
appreciate Officer Johnny
Holley and to take this oppor-
tunity to thank him for all his
help in our recent activities,
helping with the parade when
officer's were limited that
day, traffic patrol for the
. Children's Christmas recent-
ly held at Oak Center, Safety
week in our school systems,
representing the Police
Department in the Fall
festival at St. Anthony’s, and
helping to set up
Neighborhood Crime Wat-
ches throughout Wylie. We
feel that he is a positive force
on all of our children.
All these duties and putting
his life on the line daily makes
Johnny Holley someone who
we respect and admire.
Let’s take time to think of
other positives in the Com-
munity and focus on them for
a while. It will make it a bet-
ter place to live.
Respectfully yours,
Linda Hamar
Charlene McVay

plants consisted of direct cur-
rent dynamos powered by
reciprocating steam engines.
Following the introduction in
the late 1880’s of alternating
current generators, the turbo-
generator was ^yeloped; and
by the beginning of the twen-
tieth century the latter had
become the accepted method
of producing electric power in
the central station.
It was in 1883 that a group
of businessmen in Dallas,
then a thriving town of about
11,000 population, built a
power plant equipped with
four dynamos, each supply-
ing energy for ten arc lamps
in the downtown area. This
was only about three years
after New York City and
Boston had been able to boast
electric street lights, and only
about one year after the in-

itial operation of New York’s
Pearl Street station.
Other towns in Texas quick-
ly began planning for the
establishment of electric
plants. First efforts of the
most ambitious groups often
failed to produce immediate
concrete results; but
perseverance and determina-
tion on the part of a few local
citizens often brought about
the initial installations, which
provided only limited energy
usually for arc lights on the
streets of the business sec-
tions, until the carbon fila-
ment incandescent lamp was
made practical for general
use.
