"Telognosis" Will Permit X-Ray
Diagnosis Over Telephone Wires
PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 26. (UR)
Two scientists disclosed today
the development of a machine
that can send X^ray pictures ov-
er telephone wires' or radio cir-
cuits. ' -.....:--------
It is a step toward bringing
the diagnostic skill of the city
specialist to the rural hospital.
The device, called a Roentgeno-
graphic Facsimile Recorder, al-
r> ady is ■ at work between the
Chester County Hospital. West
Chester, Pa., and the big medical
centers here. '
Dr. J. Gershon-Cohen and A.
G. Cooley d< scribes the machine
in the current issue of radiology,
official publication of the radio-
logical society of North America.
Cooley did the design and Dr.
Gershon-Cohen supervised its
used by newspaper picture’j/rff- '■

in that it uses photo electric cells
to pick uo light signals aod send
them over telephone wires to re-
ceivers on the other end.
Under normal conditions, Gcf-
shon-Cohen and Cool^v said, a 14
by 17-mcTfX-ray film can be trans-
mitted in four and a half intrudes,
and smaller films can be tr,ans-
mitted in ' correspondingly less
time. Several small films can be
transmitted at the same time.
‘ Since the machine, went into
operation, there have been sev-
eral dramatic experiences with
it. the scientists reported. In one
case a patient suffering acute
abdominal symotoms Was admit-
ted to the We‘-t CftesUr Hospital.
The surgeon in charged desired
un emergency X-ray conrulla-
clinical applications.

“They’re not the best-looking
hoarders a man ever had," Hack
Turner said one day, “and they’ve
got awful tempers. But I’ve found
it pays to have ’em around.”
Hack was talking about a fam-
ily of barn owls, nesting in his silo
this year. Some folks believe those
little white-faced screechers kill
chickens—and ought to be shot on
j, sight. But Hack disagrees.
■“Up at State University they’ve
studied barn owlslor years—and
never known one to eat a chicken.
On the other hand, a daddy owl
will clean tip around 300 mice a
month. Farmers that, kill barn
owls arc throwing away the best
mousetraps known to man 1”
From where I sit, when someone
shows a prejudice against any
group of animals or humans it’s
usually just based on misunder-
standing. For instance, some folks
are plumb intolerant about those of
’us who enjoy an occasional quiet
glass of beef. (let to really know us
and you’re liable to find we’re
pretty good birds at that!
