$230,000 Grant
To EMS Systems
Kmergency Medical Services
(EMS) in ifie 19 county West
Central Texas area has been
awarded a $230,000 federal
grant to help finance emer
geney medical care develop
ment during the next twelve
months.
John C. Nunn, EMS Systems
Coordinator for West Central
Texas, says the grant will
assure the continued improve
ment of emergency care
throughout this area
“Those Federal funds are
badly needed", Nunn said "A
large part of the grant will help
pay for ambulances and cbm
munications equipment. Tan
gible items like those are the
backbone of any EMS system,
and that's especially true in a
region as large as this one "
The grant was announced by
the Division of EMS, U S.
Department of Health, Educa
tion and Welfare It was
officially given to the Texas
Department of Health, which
was awarded five such grants
for EMS Systems statewide
Nunn, an employee of Public
flealth Region 4, administers
the grant locally,
'Counties that will benefit
from the grant are Brown,
Callahan, ('oleman, Comanche,
Eastland, Fisher, Haskell,
Jones, Kent. Knox, Mitchell,
Nolan, Runnels, Scurry, Shac
kelford, Stephens, Stonewall.
Taylor and Throckmorton.
Funds for development of
EMS Systems are available
because of the EMS Systems
Act of 1973. The act provides
grants for up to five years
According to Nunn, this is the
fifth and final year for
West Central Texas
T:“We’ve been getting federal
money for EMS since 1974,”
Nunn said, “a total of almost
$900,(8X1 counting this year."
(EMS grants are awarded for
fiscal years that last from July
1 till June 30.)
But next year , he said,
"we'll have to begin getting by
without that help from Wash
ington. To maintain the quality
and increase the availability of
lifesaving emergency medical
care, we'll, have to raise more
local money from now on."
