Belief in a future life, in sur
vival after death, has not been
confined to those of any one
race or religion. On the con-
trary, it may be said to have
been almost universal, wit-
nessed by various beliefs and
practices, emphasized by an-
cestor worship, the notion of
the souls of the departed living
in various animals, and the
well known practice of burying
with the dead food and the
utensils of this earthly life
But with Christians, life
after death has had a very dif-
ferent conception and signifi-
cance The conception of death
itself is lost in the larger con-
ceptioh of eternal life.
"The gift of God is eternal
life through Jesus Chnst our
Lord.” (Romans 6:23 t It is the
undying nature of the soul
through the experience of the
new life in Christ.
Rut this fact and experience
has its defimte foundation in
history in the life, death, and
HesurreeLon of Jesus of Naza-
reth. The foundation of the
experience is ift the divine,
eternal life of Jesus Himself,
and His words to His disciples,
"Because I live, ye shall live
also." (John 14 19.)
