In Our Thirty - Fourth Year
Of Con tinuous Service
/ess jawin The Case For Martin Frost
* More than a quarter century ago when we used to pick up Doris and Jack
Frost’s children for our Sunday School carpool to Beth-EI everything was
routine.
A quiet, studious and polite son, Martin would always “thank you for the
ride” and go into his home and his world beyond.
1 One summer a devoted Grandmother, Mrs. Joseph Frost came up from
■San Antonio and took Martin on a European vacation. This helped broaden
Martin’s view of that world.
Martin worked as a Congressional page one year, distinguished himself
in Law School and had a love affair with the idea of becoming a
Congressman.
E He lost his first battle some years ago. But he kept working, fighting and
■trying. And though he lost that battle, he never lost the thrill of political op-
portunity. He was consistent. He aided Congressman Jim Wright, was a
staff writer for Congressional Quarterly Weekly Report in Washington,
D.C., and, of course, graduated in the top 15 per cent of his class from
Georgetown Law Center in Washington, D.C.
■a We all expected this from bright, persistent Martin. After all wasn’t he
■the top carpooler? Where else did he get all that savvy in those quiet
■moments when we were driving the car-pool keeping the kids laughing and
their minds off (or on) Sunday School?
But Martin achieved much more than that! He worked as a reporter for
the old Fort Worth Press (now defunct) and also was a legal commentator
for PBS KERA-TV when it was a fledgling. He also served as a law clerk for
federal Judge Sarah T. Hughes, a prestigious plum for a young attorney.
■ Martin still had designs on a Congressional seat and he tried again in the
1978 primary and defeated an entrenched Democratic Rep. Dale Milford,
for the post getting 55 per cent of the vote. In November he defeated his
Republican opponent by garnering 54 per cent of the total vote in a district
that criss-crosses Oak Cliff, Grand-Prairie, more than half of Irving in Dallas
County and also includes Arlington, Mansfield, Kennedale, a part of Euless
and east Fort Worth in Tarrant County.
f Then Martin accomplished more than just getting elected. Texas Jewish
Post research showed that he became the first Jewish Congressman to be
elected from the Lone Star State.
That distinction of being a “first” moulds into Martin Frost’s
background. His family has been in Texas for over a century. Martin’s
mother’s family settled in Rusk County. His grandfather, M.H. Marwil was
(mayor of Henderson and his uncle Charles Brachfield was a noted Rusk

Israeli Military-Political
Circles Unhappy About New
U.S.-Egypt Military Exercises
BY YITZHAK SHARGIL
TEL AVIV [JTA] -
Israeli military and political
circles are unhappy over the
joint U.S-Egyptian military
exercises to be held late
next month or early in
December. According to
reports from Washington,
1400 American military per-
sonnel are due in Egypt to
participate.
Official reactions have
been low keyed. Deputy
Defense Minister Mordechai
Zipori observed that “the
sending of American troops
to Egypt was expected
against the background of
the developing pattern of
relations between Egypt
and the U.S. It is a matter
that concerns two nations
friendly to us and we can do
nothing about it.” It was
learned that the subject was
raised during the U.S.-Is-
raeli strategic talks here
earlier this month.
But Israeli military circles
are not concealing their
displeasure. One top ranking
officer said the news that
the U.S. is sending troops
for joint exercises with the
Egyptians is not happy
news. These circles accept
the idea that events in the
Persian Gulf have forced the
U.S. to demonstrate its

Dr. IV. A Criswell Denounces
Prayer Statement on Jews /l/lade
By Baptist Convention's Smith
Dr. W. A. Criswell, one of
Israel’s staunchest friends
and supporters last Thurs-
day, denounced the in-
famous statement made by
Dr. Bailey Smith, president
of the Southern Baptist
Convention, an organization
which Criswell headed in
1968 and 1969^
Dr. Bailey Smith had
preceded Governor Ronald
Reagan at the National
Affairs Briefing meeting
held in Dallas in August and
had told his audience that
God does not hear the
prayers of Jews.

Dr. W. A. Criswell
Smith was asked if he
changed his mind in Sep-
tember and said that he
hadn’t to a local reporter.
The Texas Jewish Post
had been tracking the
Reagan Campaign Commit-
tee to appraise them of
Smith’s statement for sev-
eral weeks since Gov.
Reagan had, perhaps un-
knowingly, said he endorsed
the group.
Reagan recently said he
