HORACIO LAFER, Brazil-
ian Minister of Finance, who is at
present a visitor to Washington,
is Jewish. He has a distinguished
career in the Brazilian diplomatic
service and represented his coun-
try in the League of Nations. He
is related to the Klabins, the
wealthiest Jewish family in Braz-
il and generous contributors to
Jewish causes. The Klaban family
and Vargas have been friends for
many years. One of Vargas’ sons
served as an apprentice in one of
the Klabin factories. The New
York Times welcomed Lafer bo
the United States in an editorial.

PROFESSOR LOUIS Fink-
elstein, president of the Jewish
Theological Seminary, is breaking
the lance for Professor Maclver.
According to my good friend and
former classmate, Maclver is a
scholar, a gentleman and a great
liberal. Exactly a year ago, Mac-
lver was awarded the Seminary’s
honorary title ef Doctor of Let-
ters and he is connected with the
Institute of Religious and Social
Studies sponsored by the Semin-
ary. If the charges that have been
levelled against Maclver by var-_
■pious writers have any basis, then
the Seminary and its president
are somewhat on the spot.
Professor Finkelstein cites a
book by Maclver, “The More Per-
fect Union,” as proof that Maclv-
er is not an advocate of assimila-
tion. We are satisfied that Profes-
sor Maclver’s report on the Jew-
ish defense agencies proves be-
yond a shadow of a doubt that he
is in favor of assimilation and not
