POSTORIALS
LIVING LEGACY
The year 1956 marks the 100th anniversary of the birth
of the g? eat American and great Jew, Louis D. Brandeis.
To celebrate the centennial of the man whom Woodrow Wil-
son praised as “a friend of all just men and a lover of the
right,” whom FDR fondly called “Isaiah,” and whom Steph-
en Wise affirmed as “indisputably and incomparably our
greatest Jew since the day of Herzl,” the American Jewish
Congress will re-examine the philosophy and lifework of the
Supreme Court Justice and a founder of the Congress at its
National Biennial Convention, to be held from April 12-15 at
the Hotel Biltmore in New York City.
That the AJ Congress delegates plan to explore the
magnificent Brandeis legacy is a heartening tribute to a man
whose teachings and precepts helped to mold the nation and1
his people. Brandeis, the American jurist, profoundly af-
fected our concepts of government, freedom, democracy and
social justice. Brandeis, the American Zionist who was so
influential in effectuating the Balfour Declaration, dreamed
and worked for the Jewish Homeland. Brandeis, the affirma-
tive Jew, fought not only for the rights of Jews throughout
the world, but labored unceasingly to lead his fellow Amer-
ican Jews toward democracy in Jewish life. This vast effort,
40 years ago, shook American Jewish life to its core. The
great debates gave form and substance to the surging Con-
gress Movement and led to the creation of American Jewry’s
first instrument for expressing its democratic will.
Brandeis’s legacy was left to all Americans and to all
Jews. We wish the AJ Congress delegates well in their
convention deliberations; we commend their example to the
entire community, who would profit exceedingly from a re-
study of Brandeis’s thinking and actions on the nature of
democracy and the Jewish heritage.
TRIBUTE FOR MRS. GEORGE A. LEVY i
Coming in for a deserved share of recognition last week
was Mrs. George A. Levy, devoted B’nai B’rith worker and
former secretary of Dallas Lodge 197. Mrs. Levy, after
many years of service, has left her position with the Dallas
Lodge. In grateful tribute, the Lodge presented her with a
District Grand Lodge Citation for meritorious service and
one from Lodge 197.
We, too, want to record our commendation to a fine
woman.
B. MAX MEHL AWARD
This coming Monday, in Fort Worth, Mr. B. Max Mehl
long known as the Coin King of the world, will receive the
annual citation from the National Conference of Christians*
and Jews.
Mr. Mehl has been active in the National Conference of
Christians and Jews, and well deserves this tribute that is
being paid to him.
At the same time we would like to congratulate the
Conference for their wonderful strides in making Brot> *r-
hood a reality.

Doubts War
In Middle East
UNITED NATIONS, N. Y.
(WNS) — Belief that there will
be no war in the Middle East
was voiced here this week by
F. K. Khrishna Menon, chief of
India’s delegation to the United
Nations, who simultaneously as-
serted that India had “no right
to pose as mediator” between
i Israel and the Arab states.
Addressing a luncheon tender-
ed him by the United Nations
Correspondents A s s o c i ations,
the Indian diplomat said the
Arab-Israel issue was in the
hands of the United Nations
and that “unless circumstances
warrant, we have no right to
pose as mediators, even if we
are competent.” He said it was
his personal opinion that “open
war will not be permitted to
develop by either side or by
world opinion” and that “neith-
er side wants to sacrifice world
opinion through violent war.”
Israelis, Syrians
Exchange War Prisoners
TEL AVIV (WNS) — In a war-
like setting, Israel and Syria this
week exchanged prisoners. Across
the Daughters of Jacob Bridge
above the Jordan River, forty-one
Syrians and five Israelis were ex-
changed in a transfer negotiated
by the United Nations Truce Sup-
ervision Organization and the In-
ternational Red Cross.
The Israelis who were returned
to their families included four sol-
diers captured in December, 1954,
by the Syrians and a civilian kid-
napped in August, 1954. The sol-
diers were Lt. Meir Moses, Corp-
orals Meir Yacobi Yacob Lind and
Gad Kastelanietz. The Israeli civ-
ilian was Shlomo Ben Yehuda. A
fifth soldier captured with them,
Uri Ilan, committed suicide in a
Damascus prison.
The Syrian prisoners who were
repatriated included 35 soldiers,
most of whom were captured in the
December 12, 1955, raid, and six
civilians. The parents of the Israel-
is were present near the Bnot Ya-
acov Bridge where the exchange
took place.
