Rotary International is one of the most popular civic organizations. They
are a mix of educators, businessmen, the clergy, the professions and try to
garner prestigious people into their membership.
Moreover their speakers are usually informative and interesting.
As you enter towns and cities across the great highways of America —
and many overseas — you’ll see the symbol of Rotary International
proclaiming a welcome and usually telling you when Rotary meets.
There is one problem.
Rotary International is a for men only group.
They admire women — we’ve heard great stories about women coming
from the lips of Rotary speakers.
But that’s as far as it goes.
Rotary International’s policy of membership bars women from its ranks.
Several Jewish organizations are trying to change this.
The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has asked the Supreme Court of the
United States to affirm a lower court decision to prohibit a Rotary Inter-
national local chapter from discriminating against women on the basis of
sex.
The California Court of Appeals ruled that the Rotary Club of Duarte,
California, is a “business establishment” and must comply with that
state’s civil rights laws by opening its membership to women.
ADL’s amicus curiae (friend of the court) brief argued that Rotary’s claim
that the admission of women would violate the constitution’s freedom of

Canadians Shocked By Reversal
Of Nazis Propagandist Zundel's Conviction
BY BEN KAYFETZ
TORONTO (JTA) - The On-
tario Court of Appeals, in a
move that stunned Jews and
civil libertarians in Canada, has
unanimously reversed the con-
viction of German-born anti-
Semitic propagandist Ernst
Zundel, who was sentenced in
1985 to 15 months’ imprison-
ment for distributing a booklet
entitled "Did Six Million Really
Die?” a denial that the
Holocaust occurred.
INDEX
The court overturned the
conviction on technical groun-
ds but upheld Section 177 of
the Canadian Criminal Code
under which he was convicted
— "spreading false news” —
and allowed that a new trial
may be ordered. The Attorney
General has 21 days to
challenge the Appeals Court
ruling. He may appeal to the
Supreme Court, order a new
trial or drop the charges.
A new trial would give Zundel

another public forum from
which to promulgate his racist
views and denial of the
Holocaust and, as he made
clear in an interview with the
Toronto Globe & Mail, that is
exactly what he had hoped for.
'The Worst Of Both Worlds'
Charles Zaionz, chairperson
of the Canadian Jewish
Congress' Ontario chapter, and
Rose Wolfe, chairperson of its
Joint Community Relations
Committee, said that while it
was gratifying that the Appeals
Court upheld Section 177,
"one recoils at the possibility
of a second trial which would
grant the accused a renewed
opportunity to stage-manage a
circus.”
Alan Borovoy, speaking for
the Canadian Civil Liberties
Association, said the decision
was “the worst of both
worlds." Not only "must Jews
and (Holocaust) survivors be
put through the agony of
another trial, but Canada is
stuck with a law that could

Naval Task Force Nears Lebanon;
Rabin Warns Syria Not To
Use Chemical Weapons On Israel
History is repeating itself as a
United States naval armada
sailed closer to Lebanese
territorial waters Wednesday at
TJPost presstime.
Reports attributed to official
sources in Washington said
contingency plans for air
strikes against terrorist camps
are being refined or revised.
U.S. military buildup in-
cludes two aircraft carriers, a
contingent of U.S. marines and
other forces. In all the Task
Force now consists of 22 war-
ships. Another contingent of
1900 Marines was reported to
have left Spain to join the Task
Force on Tuesday.
Civilian aircraft flying near
the 6th Fleet were being war-
ned to stay clear.
Defense Minister Yitzhak
Rabin had warned Syria about
the use of chemical weapons.
He said, in a speech to Israeli
High school students, that
Israel has information that
Syria possesses chemical
weapons more potent than
those used by Iraq in its war
with Iran, according to a JTA
dispatch. He admonished
Damascus and Syrian President
Assad not to even contemplate
chemical warfare against Israel
because they (Syria) knew what
the reprisals would be.
The JTA dispatch con-
tinued:
Israel Defense Force has
taken measures to protect
soldiers and civilians against
poison gas attacks. He said four
million gas masks are in stock
at central warehouses and that
a practice drill indicated they
could be distributed swiftly
throughout the countrv.

Australian Government Checking
Reports Former Nazis Hiding There
BY DAVID LANDAU
AND
HUGH ORGEL
JERUSALEM (JTA) - Prime
Minister Robert Hawke of
Australia said here that his
government is studying reports
that many former Nazis and SS
officers have found refuge in
Australia.
The reports, submitted by
Jewish groups, concern alleged
Nazi war criminals who im-
migrated to Australia after
World War II. "We will under-
take whatever steps are
necessary,” Hawke told repor-
ters. (See Related Story Rage

The Australian leader is on a
three-day visit to Israel, the fir-
• st ever by a Prime Minister of
Australia. He arrived from Jor-
dan where he had meetings
with King Hussein.
At a dinner in his honor at
the Knesset Tuesday night,
Hawke called for Palestinian
self-determination. However,
he said he had the impression
from his visit to Jordan that a
Jordanian-Palestiman con-
federation was a widely sup-
ported solution to the
Palestinian problem.
'Differences Among
Friends'
Hawke, who heads a Laborite
government in Canberra,
acknowledged that his views on
the Palestinians are not
eeneraliv shared by Israelis. He
spoke Wednesday of "differen-
ces among friends.” He told
the newspaper Davar that those
differences did not cloud
relations between Israel and
Australia.
In fact, Hawke's remarks on
the Palestinian issue were
carefully worded and followed
close -consultations between
his aides and the Foreign
Ministry in Canberra. They also
reflected his private conver-
sation Tuesday with President
Chaim Herzog who urged his
guest not to issue a direct call
to Israel to support a
Palestinian state, as apparently
he intended to do originally.
Nevertheless, Hawke is

Australian Jewry Promised Speedy
Investigation Of Nazis In Hiding
NEW YORK (JTA) - The
president of the Executive
Council of Australian Jewry,
Leslie Caplan, said he expects
the government of Prime
Minister Robert Hawke will
take steps within the next two
months to implement most of
the recommendations of a
recently concluded official
probe into the presence of
fugitive Nazi war criminals in
Australia.
Speaking in New York at a
meeting of the World Jewish
Congress-American Section,'
Caplan outlined the history of
the war criminals issue in
Australia. He noted that in
1961, Australia’s then Attorney
General, Sir Garfield Barwick,
had flatly ruled out taking legal
action against suspected Nazis.
Barwick said at the time,
"We think the time has come
to close the chapter” so that
Australia might "enable men to
turn their backs on past bitter-
ness and make a new life for
themselves and for their
families in a happier com-
munity.”
In June 1986, following more
than a year of investigative
reporting by •"“Hia
disclosing the presence ui ac-
cused Nazi war criminals in the
country, the government ap-
pointed Andrew Menzies, a
retired government official to
direct a comprehensive in-
vestigation into the matter. But
after decades of government
inaction, Australia’s Jews
remained skeptical, Caplan
noted. "Frankly, we feared a
whitewash was being plan-
