BISD to observe Texas Public School Week
When the state observes Texas
Public Schools Week March 2-6, it
will be fto small celebration.
Over three million students are
planning activities to show what
they are learning. Schools across
the state are issuing special in-
vitations to parents and the com-
munity' to visit classrooms and
watch education in action.
“Parents and other communi-
ty members are always welcome
in our schools,” Bastrop Indepen-
dent School Superintendent Dr.
Paul H. Fleming said.
“This week we are going all out
to show them the exciting things
happening in the district,” he
added.
This year’s thepe, “Stars Ear-
ning Stripes,” will be used in each
of the 1069 Ttexas school districts.
This theme epitomizes the
achievements of Texas school
children.

Lula Hollins Moore, 87
M
Lula Moore of Bastrop died
Monday, February 24,1992. She
was 87.
She was born to Lee Hollins and
Belle Hollins on January 20,1905
in Utley.
It was in Utley at an early age
that she accepted Christ as her
Savior, at the Union Hill Baptist
Church.
In Utley, she received her for-
mal education.
She was a long-time Bastrop
resident.
She is well-remembered by
Bastrop old-timers as the
operator of the Bridge Cafe which
used to occupy a site near the
Coca-Cola Bottling plant, now the
Ladies of Charity, on Chestnut.
She also worked as a domestic
helper for many prominent
Bastrop families.
Lula loved to fish above all
things and on a sunny day she
could be found on the bank of
some pond.
She was an avid gardener and
a renowned cook.
She is survived by her cousins;
Augusta Banks, Lullaby Jones,
Annie Mae Davidson, Dora Col-
lins, Mattie Fowler, James E.
Jones, Issac K. Jones Jr., Sevilla
McDonald and Day Early, all of
Austin, Rufus Jones and Henriet-
ta Jones of El Paso; and a host of
other relatives and friends.
Services will be held on Satur-
day, February 29 At 2 p.m. at
Union Hill Baptist Church in
Utley. Burial will follow in Fair-
view Cemetery.
Myers (Smitty) Smith, 78
Myers (Smitty) Smith, age 78,
of Smithville, passed away
Wednesday, February 26,1992.
Mr. Smith had been employed
many years with Covert Buick.
He was a veteran of World War II.
He was preceded in death by
his wife, Doris Smith in 1987.
Survivors include sons, Donald
Smith of Boulder, Colorado, Dale
Smith of Indianapolis, Indiana,
Glen Smith of Dallas and Larry
Smith of Richardson; daughter,
Jeanne S. Fry of Richardson;
brother, DeVore Smith of Mes-
quite; sisters, Wanda Klunder of
Kansas City, Missouri and Ber-
nice Spencer of Florida; 13
grandchildren and one
great-grandchild.
The family received visitors at
the funeral home Friday,
February 28 from 7 to 9 p.m.
Gravesde services will be held
at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February
29 in Pin Oak Cemetery, in
Smithville with Reverend A.D.
Eberhart officiating.

Thomas H. Watson of
Smithville died Thursday,
February 20,1992. He was 83.
He was bom on June 21,1908 in
Milan, Tennessee to Ernest C.
Watson and Ivy Frazier Watson.
He worked with Mutual of
Omaha for 30 years. This work

Rachel Harper of Milan,
Tennessee.
Services were held Saturday,
February 22 at Marrs-Jones
Funeral Home in Smithville at 2
p.m. Burial followed in Oak Hill
Cemetery in Smithville.

He is survived by his wife, Rose
of Smithville; son, Robert H. Wat-
son of Captain Cook, Hawaii; two

open house activities on Tuesday,
March 3, between the hours of
6:30-7:30 p.m. Visitors are
welcome to visit classrooms all
week.

•Bastrop High School Prin-
cipal James Richardson has ex-
tended an invitation to parents
and other community members
to visit the high school during
Public Schools Week.
All visitors to any campuses

pass from the principal’s offide
before visiting classrooms.

house on Thursday, March 5 at 7
p.m. Since this is the end of the
six weeks period, parents will
have an excellent opportunity to
meet with teachers regarding stu-
dent progress, according- to
Fleming.
• Genesis High School invites
parents and community
members to visit during the day
program (8-3:30) or during night
classes (4-10).
