Important In the common dis-
cussion of the use of alcohol by
expectant mothers Is the fact that
©W*. m»».,mIIm| I....... m * m Im S 1\ .. », it,, I,.
lem seldom are defined and Iso-
lated.
Thus no point Is established at
which use Is separated from abuse.
Nor Is adequate consideration giv-
en to the economic and social con-
ditions of the woman.
If money is spent on alcohol
which should be spent on food,
then there is no doubt that the
action Is Injurious.
But In that cane the alcohol Is
Incidental. The harm would be lit-
tle less If the money were spent
on anything else. For In all In-
stances the mother would be de-
prived of the food she requires.
The body tolerance for poisonous
substances Is largely dependent up-
on the quantity of the substance
gaining entrance. While alcohol
! may be poisonous In excessive dos-
j es, in small quantities it may *f-
I feet no harm.
This Iasi observation must not
be construed as an endorsement or
approval of the use of alcohol by
pregnant women, or by anyone.
Its purpose Is merely to deny
the validity of the general claim
that alcohol la Injurious to the
pregnant woman, without refer-
ence to the quantity consumed or
to other conditions.
And so, while dire consequences
to the infant have been attributed
to the use of alcohol by the ex-
pectant mother, scientifically con-
trolled studies do not substantiate
such beliefs.
