District Champion
Debate Team
Debators Win District
For the fourth consecutive year, the
Burleson High School Debate Team has
won the U1L District Meet.
Two BHS teams have also earned the
right to advance to the UIL Regional
meet at North Texas State University.
The first place debate team in the
contest was Keith Coulter and Laurie
Greer, who went undefeated and beat
Arlington Lamar in the final round to
capture the championship.
Also going undefeated and taking the
debate-off over Arlington High for third
place was the BHS team of Diane
Parker and Debby Wright.
Just missing out on a regional berth
was the team of Dan Fielding and Mark

Firework Fund A Bust
A baseball game with no hot dogs? A movie with no popcorn? A carnival with
no cotton candy ?
Unthinkable! What could be worse?
How about a once In a hundred year* celebration with no grand finale?
That’s apparently going to be the case with Burleaon as it proudly culminates
its Centennial Celebration with—nothing. Plans were to have a giant fireworks
display paid for by public subscription.
.The public’s not subscribing to mat, though. After two weeks of taking dona-
I' Ut»a to reach the goal of 12,000, there’s a grand total of 50 bucks in the fireworks
fund, said Harold Wallace. And every dim* of that was put in by folks involved
with planning and carrying out the Centennial observance.
“We’ve had a couple of calls and a few promiaee,” said Wallace, who is coor-
dinating the fund drive, “but little hard cash has come in. v_’_

For the fourth straight year, Burleson High School has won the UIL District Cham-
pionship in debate. Team members going to the state contest are
Diane Parker. Debby Wright and Laurie Greer. Back: Forensics Dl
Lybbert and Keith Coulter. Star Pheto
Nelon. They placed fourth at the
district meet last Thursday at Arl-
ington Sam Houston.
“This was a tremendous win for us,”
said BHS Forensics Director Blair Lyb-
bert. “Our district was tougher in
debate this year than ever before.
Lamar has one of the top teams in the
state. I’m really proud of our team.”

was being worked out. The city at-
torney advised against erecting a bar-
ricade, however, and the mayor also
seemed to feel a permanent solution
Should be worked out as soon as possi-
ble.
Also on tonight’s agenda:
—A request by the Burleson Area
Chamber of Commerce for city par-
ticipation in the annual July 4 celebra-
tion.
—Final reading on an ordinance
changing the zoning from single family
to commercial on die vacant lot on the
corner of the Highway 174 east service
road and Renfro Street.

—Filial reading on an ordinance

—APPOINTMENT OF A city health
officer for a two year period. Dr.
Robert Shaw currently holds that posi-
tion but is apparently ineligible to be
reappointed. State law requires that the
health officer in a city of more than
10,000 persons reside in the city limits.
Final census figures put Burleson well
above that mark.
—Approval of purchase requisitions
and checks.
