“We didn’t want to bring
them along too fast. Some
teams peak too soon.”
Several key Elks had been
ailing earlier but Rupprecht
had pretty much what he
considered his first team in
action Saturday at Grape-
vine.

ACTUALLY, THE Elks
also ran Friday night at Dun-
canville and had good per-
formances but the team was
concentrating on individual
events and finished fourth in
a strong field with 76 points.
Plano won the meet and
Arlington Lamar and Dun-
canville finished just ahead
of Burleson.
In the Grapevine meet Sat-
urday, the sprint relay ^gam
of Travis Waren, Richard
Miles, Ward Whites and
Mark Bourland finished
third at 43.6.
“Another step and I think
we would have won,” Rup-
precht said. “Mark was real
ly gaining on them.”
)n the 880, Chris Rightmer
was fourth in 2:01.2, running
his best time ever.
Barry Hutson finished
fourth in the 120 hurdles in a
time of 16.1 and Richard
Miles finished third in the 100
meters at 11.02.

WHITES HAD hs best per-
formance yet, finishing third
in the intermediate hurdles
at 40.9.
Bourland won the 200 me-
ters in 22.4 and the mile relay
team of Whites, Rightmer,
Miles and Bourland finished
second at 3:26.0.
The Elks also did well in
the field events with Lewis
going 6-6 in the high jump to
tie a school record. Terry
Ford was fourth in the high
jump at 6-2 and Terry John-

Lewis was second in the
high jump and won the long
jump in 20-9, a pretty good
jump considering he was
leaping into the win.
The big news for the Elks
came in the shot put where
Shorty Jones won in 50-9.

STEVE CLINE was se-
cond in the pole vault at 12-6
and Perry Campbell was
sisth at 11-0.
At Duncanville the quartet
of Warren, Whites, Miles and
Bourland finished third at
43.8.
Rightmer was fourth in the
880 at 2:04.2. Bourland won
the 100 in 10.1.
Bourland was second in
the 220 at 22.7.
Jones unleashed a 162-foot
toss to take second in the
discus and was fifth in the
shot at 48-2. Zack Wells was
third in the discus at 150 feet.
In the high jump, Lewis
was third and Ford, sixth, as
both cleared 6-0.

LEWIS AGAIN jumped in-
to the wind and won the long
jump at 20-8.

afraid those Arlington sc hols
will two and three-point us to

“The key to Elkette hopes
will be if the Arlington
schools split points evenly.
“I predict it will be a fight
to the end for the team
championship,’’ McAvoy
said.
The Elkettes finished third
in the 5A division at Weath-
erford last weekend in their
toughest meet of the year.
Angela Pregeant won both
the 3,200 and 1,600 meter
runs and will run those two
events in district. She will
also run a leg on the mile
relay.

MCAVOY HOPES Pre-
geant’s distance efforts will
earn her a trip to Austin. The
first two qualifiers in indivi-
dual events and relays quali-
fy for regional and the top
two at regional go to the
state meet
Pregeant qualified for the
state cross-country meet.
Pregeant’s times were
11:54.5 in the 3,200 and
5:33.37 in the 1,600, races
thatare metrically close to a
mile and two mile.
Shari Parks had a good
day in the field events, win-
ning the high jump at 5-2 and
taking third in the long jump
at 16-7 W.

OTHER PLACES for the
Elkettes at Weatherford in-
cluded a third in the 800
meters by Lori Rightmer at
2:37, a fourth in the 400 me-
ters by Ruthie Hindman at
62.6 and a fifth by Debby
Muggli at 63.1 in the same
event.
Lori Day was sixth in the
200 meters at 27.1.
The team of Muggli, Hind-
man, Lori Guarino and Pre-
geant was second in the mile
relay in an impressive 4:11.2
time.
The BOO meter relay team
of Muggli, Hindman, Parks,
and Lori Day was third. In
Uie sprint relay, the quartet
of Parks, Amy Worsham,
Lori and Michelle Day were
fifth at 53.6.
The Elkettes finished third
in district last year.
Heavy showers Friday
caused a delay in the meet
and forced cancellation of
the pole vault.
This weekend, the Elks
enter the ArlingtonRelays at
UTArlington Statium. Field
eventsstartat9:30a.m. with
running finals beginning at 5
p.m.
