Scientists study
nicotine addiction
impact on brain
Scientists in Texas arc exploring
new approaches to the stud\ ol
drug abuse, locusing on how nico-
tine addiction develops in the
brain.
"Nicotine is a ma|or drug ol
abuse and a major killer." said l)i
James Patrick, a neuroscientist at
Baylor. College ol Medicine in
Houston "The evidence is m more
than 440,000 tobacco related
deaths annually in the l S and
Canada
In hopes ol developing wavs to
overcome nicotine addition,
Patrick, himself an ex-smokei is
studying the molecular aspects ol
nicotine action in the brain
"People often seem to think
drugs ol abuse achieve their results
through 'magic’” he said. but. in
I act, they modify the body in some
way that causes n to need that
drug ”
In the case of nicotine, one ol
the most addictive of drugs, Patrick
thinks the modification is an in-
crease m the number of some ol
the sites where nicotine chemically
binds in the brain
Research indicates the nicotine
binding sites in the brain are about
double the number of smokers as m
non-smokers.
Studying how, where and why
nicotine reacts with these sites has
been the focal point ol Patrick's
scientific career for more than 20
years.
He is studying how nicotine
changes the abundance ol the sites
in the brain and the possible tie to
addition.
"Telling people to nisi say no'
after an addition has developed is
inappropriate and naive," Patrick
said, "because at that point it's a
medical problem rather than simply
a matter of choice "
The number ol lives lost each
year to nicotine addition is about
10 times greater than the number
ol people who die as a direct
consequence of all other kinds of
drug abuse, Patrick said
Rev. Jerry A. Davis has been appointed pastor of Laurel

at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth. He and his
wife, Rose Marie, are parents of six children ranging in
age from 12 to 24 years. Mrs. Davis is on the
