BHS soccer yields 4
All-Region players
The All-Region Soccer Team
selections were released Monday,
and the names of four Burleson play-
ers appeared on the list.
In the girls division, Kristen
Cathy and Shauna McCollough were
chosen for the 1st All-Region Team.
Cathy has also been named to the 2nd
All-State Girls Soccer Team.
Susan Starr was named to the
2nd All-Region Team.
In the boys division, Burleson
Elk Billy Leewright was named to
the 2nd All- Region Team.
"I was glad to see him get it,"
Brent Douglas, boys soccer coach,
said. "Billy is what I would call a
team player. He is a leader, very
coachable, and an asset to the whole
program."
During the season, the senior
scored 11 goals and made 11 assists.
Last year, he was named to the 2nd
All-district Team.
Girls Soccer Coach Pam Lea
also had many good things to say of
the three Lady Elks named to the All-
Region Teams.
"Susan did a good job at both the
center forward and center halfback
positions for us this year,” Lea said.
"During the season she made 22 as-
sists and scored one quarter of our
goals.
"I was also really pleased with
Kristen's ability to score from the
center halfback and center fullback
positions. She scored 26 goals this
season and made 26 assists.
"As for Shauna, we switched her
from offense to defense earlier in the
year and she made the adjustment
beatifully and did a fine job for us.
Shauna also deserves a lot of credit
for us having a girls soccer team in
Burleson. She played on the boys JV
team during her sophomore year and
played a very instrumental part in
acquiring the team."
Last year, McCollough was
named to the 1st All-District Team
and Cathy was chosen Player of the
Year.
After the Arlington soccer tour-
nament earlier in the season, Starr
and Cathy were named to the All-
Toumamcnt Team.
April 21, Shauna and Leewright
will participate in the All Region
soccer games at Louisville High
School. The girl's game will begin at
1 p.m. and the boys will follow at 3
pan. Only seniors who were named
to one of the All- Region Teams are
allowed to participate in the game.
All-District soccer selections
have not been determined as of yet,
but both Burleson soccer coaches say
the teams will be determined within
the next seven to 10 days.

Elk baseball team reaches mid-season;
still have chance for high dist. standing
By GLENN COCHRAN
The Burleson Elks Baseball
Team has reached mid-season in
their bid for high standing in the
Districr7-5A race.
The Elks district record is 2-4,
but Gary Graves, head baseball
coach, said Burleson is tied far sec-
ond and if the Elks finish the second
half of die season playing at their full
potential they will do well against the
other teams in the district
However, the first thing the Elks
must do is break their three-game
losing streak. The Elks' 7-5 lose to
Weatherford Tuesday. April 3,
marked the beginning of the slump.
Thursday and Friday of last
week, the Elks took additional beat-
ings from Sam Houston and Arling-
ton High.
In the make-up game Thursday
with Sam Houston, the Elks opened
the scoring in the second inning with
runs by Brian Young, Bobby
Moorhead, and Wes Provence.
Sam Houston matched the three
runs that same inning, opening up the
third with a 3-3 tie.
That is when Burleson hit a
three-inning dry spell. Sam Houston
capitalized on this and scored five
runs, three in the third inning, one in
the fourth, and one in the fifth.
The Elks put their final run on
the board in the sixth inning when
Barry Reeves scored on an error.
The final score was 8-4.

BARW basketball tourney
By GLENN COCHRAN
Members of the Burleson Area
Republican Womens Political Ac-
tion Committee did it again. It was
the second Burleson Bally Hoop
Basketball Tournament, and partici-
pation was great said BARW PAC
Means and Ways Chairman Arlene
Wohlgemuth.
"We had 110 participants over-
all," Wohlgemuth said, "and there
were 27 teams in all."
The Men’s Open Division was
the most popular of the three, involv-
ing 21 teams. The remaining six
teams split down the middle to form
the High School and Slow Motion
(over 35) Divisions.
The toumamenr vkas held at
Pauline G. Hughw Mfijflle School,
utilizing the two gymnasiums for the
half-court games.
The Bad Boys took the champi-
onship in the High School pitftsjon,
going undefeated in their three
games. Members of the team include
Tyan Johnson, of Fort Worth; Kevin
^ate, Mark Drennan, and Kenny
Davis, all of Crowley.
Second place went to TMT.
rhis squad was made up by Jerry
rhompson, of Granbury; Jay Tid-
veU, of Arlington; and Mark Mid-
Ueton, of Fort Worth.

Burleson; and Robert Jenkins, of
Fort Worth.
In the Men’s Open Division,
Rob Couty's Team battled it out with
the Snipers for the Championship.
In the first round of the champi-
onship bracket, the Snipers (last
year's Men's Open Champs) defeated
Rob Couty's Team 15-13. This
forced the two teams to play again
because of the double-elimination
format the tournament followed.
Until this point, Couty's team was
undefeated.
In the second go-around, the
Snipers sixth game in a row, Couty's
team dominated and won the divi-
sion championship with a 15-9score.
Both games proved to be physi-
cal, foul-ridden, and nothing less
than entertaining.
For starters, Burleson High
School Boys Basketball Coach Phil
Anderson began officiating the first
game. After a series of intentional
fouls, of which Anderson called,
members of the two teams began to
