Volunteer of the Year to be recognized
City council members will rec-
ognize Burleson's Volunteer of the
Year during regular session this
April 28 set
as countywide
clean-up day
By Regina Steffen
Johnson County Commission-
ers met Monday, April 9, and an-
nounced a plan for a county-wide
clean-up on Saturday, April 28.
This year, the landfill in Cle-
burne wil I not be able to be used since
it has been closed. The landfills to be
used will be the one in Alvarado and
Itasca.
Due to Environmental Protec-
tion Agency (EPA) restrictions on
the disposal of oil and hazardous
liquids the county will not be accept-
ing any containers with liquid in
them.
Old tires will be accepted to be
burned at the Cleburne incinerator.
Dumping of tires has been a problem
for some of the commissioners, espe-
cially Ron Harmon of precinct two.
By allowing people to bring their
tires to drop off points around the
county, the commissioners are hop-
ing to alleviate some of the illegal
dumping that has been taking place.
Sal vagable material, such as old
sewing machines, desks, and furni-
ture will have separate drop off
points so they can be donated to non-
profit organizations for re-use.
Friday, April 20, the Social
Security Administration and other
human service agencies will have a
day long fair on the sidewalk around
the courthouse in Cleburne. The
purpose of the fair is to make people
aware of the services available to
them should the need arise.
When Ken Ketron of quality
control gave an update on court-
house repairs, he stressed that during
the workshop the commissioners had
scheduled that they discuss plans for
the law library and extension serv-
ices.
Since the increase in population
of Johnson County there has been
more requests for additional space \
the courthouse' than there is emj
space. Both the extension office and
the law library committee have asked
for the space that once belonged to
juvenile services.
Any repairs or renovations made
to the space would depend on who
would be taking over the three of-
fices.
Ketron also reported that the
lead in the old juvenile offices had
been located and repaired. He went
on to say that the tax office had been
finished the morning of the commis-
sioners court.
The one renovation that Ketron
did mention that had not been budg-
eted is to be done on the auxiliary
courtroom.
" J udge McClean needs the room
to try a special case in October. None
of the pews are fastened to the floor
so wc purchased brackets. But the
majorthing to be done there is to raise
the platform where the judge sits so
he can look the lawyers in the eye
when he speaks to diem," Ketron
explained.
Shortly after Ketron's report, the
commissioners recessed until today
at 9 a.m.
Thursday, April 12.
A special agenda item under the
citizen appearances sub-head has
been set aside for this presentation.
Thursday's agenda is relatively
short, with only four new items re-
quiring action.
Burleson's Planning and Zoning
Commission has recommended ap-
proval of the final plat of lot 1, Block
12 of the Alsbury Village Addition.
Recently the preliminary plat
was extended by the council's action
to be effective until November,
1990. This property is being platted
to accommodate the relocation of the
Educational Employees Credit
Union.
Council members are expected
to award the bid for the re-roofing of
the police department building. The
city council authorized a call forbids
on March 8 and bids were opened on
April 3. Six bids were received; the
city staff will have a recommenda-
tion for awarding the bid by Thurs-
day night.
The council is also expected to
award the bid for the city's deposi-
tory Thursday night.
The only bid received for de-
pository services came from Burle-
son State Bank (the city's current
depository). The city's bid request
asked prospective depository banks
to furnish prices for specific banking
services. The city anticipated evalu-
ating the overall content of the pro-
posals and identifying the bid offer-
ing the lowest net cost to the city.
Due to the fact that only one bid
was received, no such comparison
was necessary (nr possible).
A consent agenda to be consid-
ered Thursday night includes ap-
proval of the March 22 minutes, fi-
nancial transactions, and authoriza-
tion to call the bids for street materi-
als.
The council meets this Thurs-
day, April 12,7 p.m.,atcity hall, 141
