April Salas will again be remembered
by a memorial bicycle rodeo May 14
Even though her family is out of
the country, April Salas will be re-
membered by Burleson citizens at
the third annual April Salas Memo-
rial Bicycle Rodeo on Saturday, May
14.
April's mother, Janie Caskey, and
her brother, A. J. Salas, moved to
England for a few years when Cas-
key's employer transferred her.
April Salas died in October of
1991 at the age of 11. She was cross-
ing Hwy. 174 in the early morning
hours when she was hit by a motorist.
Caskey left the event in the ca-
pable hands of Crime Prevention
Officer Paula Ibsen and Rosie Perez
of the Burleson Optimist Club.
The rodeo will take place from
10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Burleson Com-
munity Center. Optimist Club mem-

images are transmitted by the optic
nerve to the brain, which interprets
these images into what we perceive
as sight The sun's ultraviolet rays
literally bum the retina. Patients with
retinal bums will have low, blurry
vision.
"Unfortunately, this damage will
not heal itself," Dr. Glen O. Brindley,
M.D., director of the division of
Ophthalmology at Scott and White
Memorial Hospital and Clinic in
Temple, said. "We have no medica-
tion to cure it and we cannot repair
the damage with surgery. Eyeglasses
will not correct the blurry vision
caused by retina bums."
Some people will know imme-
diately after looking at the sun that
they have damaged their vision. For
others, the blurriness creeps up on
them later in life.
According to Wade Weaver of
the Fort Worth Astronomical Soci;
ety, this is the last major United States
eclipse until 2017.

moters hope to give away one bike
and a safety helmet to a lucky partici-
pant.
Several different stations will be
set up to keep the rodeo, which is
geared to students from pre-kinder-
garten to sixth grade, running smooth-

with the Burleson Police Depart-
ment If a bicycle is stolen or found
abandoned, the police will be able to
check the registration and return the
bike to its owner.
Each child's bicycle will be is-
pected to insure that it passes safety
inspection. The promoters can not let
t'child on the obstacle course until
the bike passes inspection.
The obstacle course is a two-part
event. Officers will check to see if a
child knows and uses the proper safety
and turn signals and then the child's
coordination will be tested as eacfo^
maneuvers though traffic cones. Once
a child makes it through all those
stations, he/she gets a certificate.
Just in case some particpants or
promoters take a spill, a first aid sta-
tion will be set up to help the hurts.
April Salas Memorial Bicycle
Rodeo t-shirts will be available at the
rodeo. For more information, contat
