Sddlers Bnst Soil Fertility Pregran
Quite » few question* have been asked as to Iho
purpose for the recent display 6t bumper stickers and
windshield stickers on cars in Jackson County. These
are reminders that Jackson County is one of the 23
counties in the state engaged in the ‘‘Intensified Soil
Fertility Program.”
This program is designed to increase the net in-
come for the people of Jackson County. The program
is being sponsored by the Texas Agricultural Extension
Sendee with the assistance of the Commissioners’ Court
and various farm leaders and business men in the coun-
ty. This program is primarily directed to benefit
farmers but if a person stops to think, farming^and
ranching sets the economics for Jackson County.^
One business man stated “If the farmers makes
money, we all benefit and if he loses We all suffer.”
The Intensified Soil Fertility Program has been used
in other areas of the nation and records show an 18%
increase in income for those areas and this increase
has not beep confined to just agriculture.
To work adequately, all citizens in the county
should participate no matter how smalt this participa-
tion may be.

Business men who are already pledging their
support and who ha$6 started aome form of action for

windshield stickers. This winshield sticker is inscribed
with the wording “A COOPERATOR IN THE 4-POINT
SOIL FERTILITY PROGRAM FOR TEXAS. SEE
YOUR COUNTY EXTENSION AGENT FOR DE-
TAILS.- Some Merchants are displaying this sticker
in their place of businegs’so as to better advertise their
suport in assisting with the program. Members of the
various committees planning and devoping the pro-
, gram are also using this emblen of cooperation and
v concern for Jackson County’s future. These men
should be congratulated on their concern and devotion
to Jackson County's needs for the future.
Bumper strips are displayed to remind people
engaged in agriculture to take a soil test and fertilize
at least a part of their crop according to the soils test
analysis. Each of the four “phases in the program will
be advertised in some such timely manner when action
is needed for that particular pointy
Jackson County needs your help in supporting
the intensified Soil Fertility Program. This is one Way
we can all help, an industry -that is already located in
the" county.
An Unpleasant Picture
; During the campaign, President-Elect Kennedy,
said that, in his belief, military expenditures will have
to be substantially increased—by perhaps as much as
three billion dollars a year.
An increase of this size (to say nothing of poss-
ible increases in Spending for other projects) would
throw the budget far out of balance, and add.fuel to
the ever-present fires of inflation—unless taxes were
raised to close the budget g^p, or unless non-military
government. Spending, existing and proposed, -»were

At present taxes, dirept and indirect, consume
about a third of our eyning power, which means that
the average man worka four months for government
during each year. And never think that substantial
increase in government revenue could be gained by
raising the taxes in the high or even the middle
brackets. The rates there are' almost confiscatory
now. The great bulk of any additional tax revenue
would have to come by a broadening of the tax base—x
which is a pleasant term for hitting^the lower income

POLL TAXES DUE - Texans
::”>e until January 31 to pay the
poll tax that will enable them to
vote in 1961 elections.
Despite 1961’s being an off-year,
a major election will be held this
year. U. S Sen. Lyndon B. John-
son ended his 12-year career in the
Senate by submitting his resigna-
tion to Gov. Price Daniel on. the
opening day of Congress -
Daniel appointed William A .
Binkley of Dallas to serve until a
successor is elected this spring. A
special election to fill the dffice for
the remainder of the term will be
held April 4. If no candidate re-
ceives a majority in the fifst elec-
tion, a run-off will be held from 30
to 40 days later.
In the last special senatorial
election in April, 1957, there were
23 candidates. Some sort of crowd-
ed field is expected this year with
enough activity to give every poll
tax payer his $1.75 worth.
INAUGURATION CEREMONY -
