Come April. Mayor Harry Mauritz :* relinquish-
ing the rein* of city fovemment in Edna.
Hci stepping down after 14
efficient servic-e to hi* community
of faithful
course,
end efficient servire to bis community, of
there are some who will probably say the mayor has
not done this and not done that, with aelfiah reason
the basis of their judgement, but on the whole we think
he has done an excellent job.
/The municipal government-—hag operated har-
moniously during theae years, and that’s no mean task
for any council. With Mr. Mauritz at the helm as
presiding officer, the city affair* have" been handled
in a smooth, orderly manner Hia friendly urging:
“All right, hoys, what are we going to do about this
matter?” has brought action on many project* pver
the years. -*
Mr. Mauritz and the many councilmen who have
served tinder him have pushed through many projects,
including numerous major undertakings. To us, the
most^important were the w;ater and sewage projects.
These are the hidden marvels.that have kept pare with
the growth of"th<- « ity from a town of .-tightly over
2,000 when he became mayor in 1941 to the 6,000 they
say we have now —
There have been other major item* such as the
new City Hall and Fire Station, Mauritz Village, a mod-
ernized sewage plant, a modem sewage lift station,
some new street paving, some curbing and guttering
for better drainage, etc ,
Y'es, sir. Mayor Mauritz steps down after a job
well done
And while we're pEasing out the bouquets, let’s
not overlook the long tenur< of service performed for
his community by Travis Traylor, who fa» retiring from

How. Much Do You Read?
Indications are that nearly half of the American
people do not .read book*. This, despite the fact more
than half of our adults live within a mile of a public
library.
Presumably, most Americans are satisfied with
what they know, and do not bestir themselves to find
out anything new. It may be, too, that television broad-
casts have taken the place of reading to a large seg-
ment of our population.
The making of books has become a mass pro-
duction ent'-rpre e m the * t■,:< ■ <I State*. I n.fortoqately,
many of the books published are not. worth the time
consumed in their reading. A notable example is the
Snok ‘ Lolita”. Others are extremely partisan, pre-
aenting prejudiced viewpoint* and artful propaganda
far th e < ■ r," * that appeal to the -untie.:
We have heard young men and women talk
about their difficulty in selecting authoritative and
worthwhile books on subjects in which they happen
to be interested. These people realize that you can-
not believe everything that you see in print, and, with-
out the technical information necessary to choose wise-
ly among the author s find thepieelves at a loss in the
selection of intelligent volumes.
Nothing is to be gained by criticizing the authors
of popular volumes or the publishers who put them on
sale After all, the author wants to.write a book that
will self, and the publishers want the profits that come
'from publishing a best seller. ^
Nevertheless, libraries and publishers might ren-
der a public service if they created some agency to
function in an advisory capacity and to serve the inter-
est of readers, rather than the writers and the pub-
Hshers In the long run,'everybody would gain.
Freedom First
"1 love America, and I don’t want to live any-
where else ... I fee! so many Americans don’t appre-
ciate it .... ”
These word? were m,t • fr.un the lips of a person
wanting to make over everybody and everything, they
were spoken by* a beautiful refugee Bomanian girl.
Her childhood record included starvation, floggings,
three gun wouhds while being used for target prac-
tice in prison camps including Dachau. 6
This girl, and her family, including a brother in
the Air Force, are not finding it easy to make a liv-
ing in this country, but they put the right to be free
ahead of everything else. - J
We should never forget or belittle the right every
American has to be free This freedom should not be
forgotten when pressure groups, in or out of govern-
ment, seek td submerge the individual under mass reg-
imentation. Infringement* on individual opportunity
can destry the America the Romanian girls loves. The
right to work, the right to vote, the right to worship,
the right to speak, are not just trick slogans—they
mean liberty.
