WE HAD A CALL Thursday
mom telling us of the death of
our only aunt, Minnie Turner
... she was a most interesting
person as well as an aunt...
when she and Uncle Lovell
married sometime in the '20s,
it was a church wedding, not
too common to us then... iho
we didn't attend, we remember
hearing Mama doing a lot of
stewing on this and that... she
attended the Grand Prairie
wedding and, as well as we re-
member, she took Harriett and
they traveled by train... Mama
was concerned just how she
would be able to walk on the
many steps at the Union Depot
in Dallas, since she walked
with the support oj tw<o crutch-
es... but she made it with full
steam... our early acquain-
tance with Aunt Minnie was so
good... she took us to the Dal-
las Fair, took along a lunch of
fried chicken that we spread on
the pretty grass lawn... gee,
she was a jolly person and a lot
off ■> to a teenager... a smart
woman, she studied to help her
husband in the funeral home
which he had operated far
some time, and was one of the
first women in Texas to become
a licensed embalmer and fu-
neral director... to us she was
a great lady and will long be
cherished in our memories...
WE HAD A little winter here
this week after more rain over
the weekend... high winds
Wednesday blew cold, fol-
lowed by flurries of snow seen
here and there... Thursday, a
beautiful sunshiny day with a
morning temperature of 17 de-
grees... and in the mail we
have the Sky warn, which notes
Texas Severe Weather Aware-
ness Week is March 8-14...
a meeting has been set up in Ft.
Worth far a meeting of North
Texas Sky warn, where repre-
sentatives of different counties
will attend...
THE SHARON SHRINE
Golf Unit will once again spon-
sor their annual golf tourna-
ment to taise funds to support
the Shrine Crippled Children
and Burn Hospitals... this
year's tournament will be held
at the Hide-A-Way Lake golf
course on April 24th and
27th... this will be the 15th an-
niversary of the tournament...
the money has grown from
$2,648 the first year to
$40,500 in 1991... approxi-
mately $341,000 has been rais-
ed to date... last year, over
$25,000 was donated by indi-
viduals and businesses as well
as all the food and prizes...
COUNTY DEMOCRATIC
Chairman Cay Frances House
was among those in attendance
in the courthouse Monday
where an election workshop
was held... a representative
from the office of Secretary of
State Jack Hannah Jr. 's office
was the mam speaker...
WE HAVE SOME new
names in the Republican party
seeking the place of State Sen-
ate, District 2: Mayor Florence
Shapiro of Plano, and also

bent, had filed some time ago
and opened his campaign
sweep in Emory in December..

this time. They are Randy
Traylor, Betty Busby, Robert
Ross, Bobby Thomas. David
Nino and Thomas Hass.
Traylor made a motion to
appoint a board member. Mo-
tion died for lack of a second.
Nino said since it will be two
more months before they could
begin, it would be beiicr to
wait and let the voters make
their choice, so he made the
motion to not replace the board
member ai this time.
Traylor said appointing one
now would familiarize the new
member with the workings of
the board, and he or she could
get in on the budget work, add-
ing that the voters could still
choose one in May no matter
who is appointed.
Thomas said he felt that way
at first, but it takes so long for
them to take office, he didn’t
think they could have an op-
portunity to contribute, and re-
peated last month’s reason
‘‘they would appear to be hand
picked by the board.” Motion

Oiler Appraiser's Report:
The chief appraiser informed
the Board tne old computer
system had gone down and
could not be put back in work-
ing orde jy our office; since
the new system was working
real well, no money would be
spent on repair of the old sys-
tem. It will be placed on the
agenda next month for discus-
sion.
The Board was asked about
having our attorney, Ron Ad-
dison, attend the next meeting
to answer questions about ac-
cepting partial payments on de-
linquent taxes; disposing of
property that had not sold and
was owned by the appraisal
district; along with an update
on any pending litigation. They
agreed a question-and-answer
session would be fine.
A report was given that for
the months of October, No-
vember, and December, we
had collected $2,186,904.35
out of a $4,458,690 base, with
a collection rate of 49%. How-
ever, Unocal had purchased
the wells owned by Prairie
Producing, and Unocal nor-
mally does not pay their taxes
until January 31st. Also, would
estimate their check would av-
erage 20% of the base levy.

"It wasn't a
leak. These foreign particles
got into the gas at tne plant
where it’s processed. There’s a
safety apparatus furnished by
the producer, and then there’s
another one we have that
monitors. It’s a double safety
system. Apparently both sys-
tems railed. We ’localized the
problem in the Emory area,
and we began to establish a
perimeter between the area of
Highways 19 and 69, and at
that time, we began to dis-
charge into the atmosphere
some of the byproduct we were
getting, and reduced the
amount in the lar^e pipeline
that serves numerous cities.
When the product burned, it
created a sulphur smell, and it
set off the smoke alarms," said
Holland.
"I just want to say, I’ve
been involved in this business
some thirty-plus years, and
I’ve never received any more
cooperation than I’ve received
from the Emory Fire Depart-
ment and the Sheriff's office,
and all the folks hers In
Emory. I highly praise those
folks for all they' .c done to
make life easier for me and my
people,” stated Holland.
Besides the two ambulances
normally in the area, Russell
Ambulance Service provided
two additional ambulances,
and kept a fifth on standby.
Transported to Presbyterian
Hospital in Winnsboro were
Floyd and Barbara Rogers.
Mr. Rogers was kept for obser-
vation, while Mrs. Rogers was
released. One other person had
been transported to the hos-
pital, but it is not known at this
time if it was a related prob-
lem.
The sheriff’s office con-
tacted nearby radio stations

Monday morning to alert
Emory listeners of the avail-
