Map Specialists Addressing
Group, Inc. has been hard at work
for the people of Rains County
completing a 9-1-1 Rural Address-
ing System The 9-1-1 project is a
very large undertaking and much
more involved than most people
think. It is not only a county project
but a state and federal project, also.
The cost has been paid for by you
with the charges on your phone bill
each month over the past several
years.
Your present route and box num-
ber address will be replaced by a
calculated 9-1-1 physical address
Currently, without 9-1-1 address-
ing, residences are hard to locate in
an emergency. Time is lost and. as a
result, many bad things happen
Homes bum. residences are vandal-
ized and lives are lost.
In the unfortunate event that a
9-1-1 emergency call has to be
made, give your new 9-1-1 ad-
dress—not your old route and box.
Emergency personnel look for your
home, not your mailbox. You must
put the numbers assigned to you on
your mailbox AND at the entrance
to your residence. Just putting the
numbers on your mailbox is not
enough. Putting your 9-1-1 address
on your home will greatly reduce
the amount of time it takes to find
you or a neighbor by emergency
personnel.
Emory and Point Post Office
boxholders will keep their boxes as
their mailing address. Those who
live in Rains County will also be
given a physical address for their
residence. They should post these
numbers at their residence and. in
an emergency, relay the physical
address to the operator
Many of you have seen the Map
Specialist Addressing Group crews
driving each and every road, county
and private. Their goal was to
locate everyone; however, due to
the time span, many new homes
FOR THEIR PHYSICAL AD-
DRESS
Now the question everyone is
asking—WHEN ’ In Emory, 9-1-1
numbers will be released just after
the first of the year The 9-1-1 Ad-
visory Committee for Rains County
voted to have the intersection of
Texas Street (State Highway 19)
and Lennon Drive (U S Highway
69) as the origin, or center, of the
coordinate system. All addresses
radiate from that point.
Highway 69 and 19 intersection
to be center of coordinate system
have been built or moved into the
area. If you see that your neighbor
has a strange number on their mail-
box or at the entrance to their home
and you do not have one, call Map
Specialists Addressing Group They
want you to have a 9-1-1 number,
and you need one However,
UNTIL YOU RECEIVE A LET-
TER FROM THE U S POSTAL
SERVICE AND MAP SPECIAL-
ISTS ADDRESSING GROUP IN-
FORMING YOU OF YOUR AD
DRESS CHANGE, YOU DO NOT
HAVE A 9-1-1 ADDRESS. THE
PO. BOXHOLDERS WILL BE
NOTIFIED IN THEIR BOX TO
CONTACT MAP SPECIALISTS
At the end of the project, map
books w ill be provided to all emer-
gency providers as approved and
requested
In Point and Lone Oak, the goal
is late spring. The Rams County
patrons of the Alba Post Office have
already received their addresses.
With the growth in this area and
to keep from complicating the
issue, route and box numbers are no
longer being assigned by the Post
Office. Instead. Map Specialists
Addressing Group will assign
future addresses. They are a local
firm and offer these hints they have
found to be helpful:
1 Keep in mind the U.S. Postal
Service will deliver mail to either
the 9-1-1 address or the route and
box address for one year. At the end
of that time, your mail will NOT be
delivered to a route address.
2. Remember to change your dri-
ver’s license address
3. Notify the voter's registration
office.
4. Notify the appraisal district.
5. Notify all government and pen-
sion providers from whom you
receive checks.
6. Change your address when you
order new checks.
7. Notify all creditors
8. And, of course, all family
members and friends with whom
you correspond.
Officials of Map Specialists Ad-
dressing Group are available to
speak at any group, council, public
gathering or school to help educate
or explain the 9-1-1 addressing.
They have been working closely
with the judge, commissioners'
court, the sheriff's department and.
e, Posmtaster Sandra Long-
of course,
ley and the Emory mail carriers.
Map Specialists only assign ad-
dresses, they are not 9-1-1. Their
office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Monday through Friday. Call them
at 903-473-3911 or, for long dis-
tance only, at 1-888-260-0911.

Emory resident Elaine Bay has
written a book entitled Rains
County (Texas) Leader 1912 which
is now available during the pre-
publication stage
The genealogical gleanings in
this volume from the 1912 Rains
County Leader present a picture of
life in Texas and the United Stales
at the end of the Progressive Era.
The decade of 1910-1920 was one
of change; major issues were wom-
en's suffrage, progressive educa-
tion. prohibition and labor condi-
tions.
This small weekly newspaper
provides the genealogist or histori-
an a window into the past This
window depicts the lifestyles, so
cial habits and political activity of
the people. Everything from births,
deaths and marriages to murders
are preserved for us in this weekly
accounting
The compiler has attempted to
record in abstract form any mention
of people's names, locations or re-
lationships in the hopes that this
reference will give the genealogist
a vital fact relating to an ancestor or
add "flesh” to the ancestral skele-
ton built with vital statistics. Hope-
fully. some of the recording herein
will even give the researcher a clue
that will break down that "brick
wall' that has been blocking the re-
search progress on a family line
The information is presented
chronologically and a fullname in-
dex is included
