IRS offers Saturday
hours for taxpayer
assistance
The Internal Revenue Service
will offer special extended walk-in
service on six Saturdays from
March 7 to April 11, 1998 The of-
fices will be open from 9:00 a.m. to
3:00 p.m. local time.
Taxpayers will be able to pick up
forms and publications, get answers
to account and tax law questions,
receive verification of their individ-
ual taxpayer identification number
(ITTN), and make payments. In ad-
dition, during the last three Satur
days—March 28 and April 4 and
11—the IRS will help prepare re-
turns for low income, elderly, and
Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)
eligible taxpayers.
“Many people will find it more
convenient to visit the IRS on a Sat-
urday to get the help they need,
rather than trying to fit it into their
busy weekday schedules." said IRS
Commissioner Charles O. Rossotu
For many of these services, lax
payers do not have to visit the IRS
at all Most products and services
the IRS offers are available through
other means
For example, taxpayers with tax
law or account questions can call
the IRS on their toll-free help line
at 1-800-829-1040 from 7:00 am to
11 00 p m Monday through Satur-
day. Free forms and publications
are available through a toll-free or-
der line, at 1-800-829-3676, on the
IRS website at www irs ustreas gov
and thnugh TaxFax m 703-368-9694
And taxpayers may receive re-
turn preparation assistance from
IRS’s local Volunteer Income Tax
Assistance (VITA) and Tax Coun-
seling for the Elderly (TCE) pro-
grams
For more information on the spe-
cial Saturday hours and VITA/TCE
locations, contact your local IRS of-
fice at at 1-800-829-1040.

Law enforcement
training funds
received here
State Comptroller John Sharp
recenty delivered more than $6 mil-
lion in supplemental training funds
to 2,147 local law enforcement
agencies across the state.
“More than 53,877 Texas peace
officers now have additional funds
for ongoing law enforcement train-
ing. The good news is the state’s
smaller law enforcement agen-
cies—many of them hard-pressed
for training funds—share in this
allocation," Sharp said
Law enforcement agencies across
the state are required to meet stand-
ards set by the Texas Commission
on Law Enforcement Officer Stand-
ards and Education (TCLEOSE).
"Many of these TCLEOSE-ap-
proved training programs cost
between $55 and $75 per officer,”
Sharp said. “A class on crime-scene
investigation or fingerprinting will
cost $125 A 560-hour basic peace
officer certification class costs
between $775 and $800
In 1997, Sharp returned nearly $6
million to over 51,800 peace offi-
cers in 2,156 agencies The 1997
training fund allocation represented
the first full year the program had
been in effect
The law enacted by the Texas
legislature in 1995 requires that 20
percent of the total amount collect-
ed from a special $2 court cost ts to
be allocated equally among the
state’s law enforcement agencies
The remaining 80 percent is allocat-
ed based on the number of eligible
law enforcement positions each
agency had as of January 1
The 1998 payments to local law
enforcement agencies came from
the $2 court costs for criminal
offenses, including traffic fines,
assessed and collected on or after
January 1, 1997, through December
31, 1997, and remitted to the
Comptroller's Office. Payments of
the previous year’s collection are
made by the Comptroller each
February
The Rains County Sheriff’s
Office received $1,885.20, and the
Rains County Constable received
$652.10.
