Bob Giles of Canlon has
helped approximately 1,000
families and Individuals fi-
nance tlielr homes In tlie last
14 years.
Giles, 41, has served as coun-
ty supervisor for tlie Farmers
Home Administration (FmHA)
office In Canton since 1971, He
was recently promoted to the
position of assistant district
director and will begin work-
ing out the the T yler FmHA
office February 15.
During his time In Von Zandt
County, Giles has seen the
county go from a strong agri-
cultural base to a residential
base.
"Housing Is the big problem
here In Van Zandt County pri-
marily because of tlie loca-
tion, with Interstate 20 split-
ting the county," Giles said.
"It's a good place to live, a
good location near both Dallas
and Tyler, tlie soil Is good, and
tliere Is an abundance of wa-
ter."
Giles predicts that Van Zandt
County will continue to grow
Just as the demand for housing
l*as grown over tin) last 14
years.
"Tlie housing demand has
been good, and I think It will
continue to be good," Giles

925 home loans, the office has
lielped finance around 125
farm loans of various types,
Including real estate, dairy,

"There are not very many

quite a few crop loans liere In
Van Zandt County," Giles said.
The FmHA finances more
than Just itome and farm type
loans, Tlie Canton office has
been port of helping to fi-
nance more than 15 commun-
ity water systems, the Van
Zandt County Country Club,
the Canton Little League
fields, and rental property,
according to Giles.
"We’re pretty big and pretty
active. Our program Is set up
to help on an Individual basis
those people who don’t have
tlie down payment or collat-
eral to get financing through
conventional sources," lie said.
"We’re helping the lower-lnr
cgme people, There are a |ol
of young couples Just starting
out who can’t get conven-
tional financing, and there are
a lot of older, retired people
on social security or fixed In-
comes who were never able
to save the money to buy o
house through conventional
sources," lie noted.
Giles said the FmHA helps
people In many ways, Includ-
ing the processing of applica-
tions, getting credit Informa-
tion, conducting building In-
spections, and giving credit
counseling.
The average home loan Is
around $35,000 and Giles said
almost all of the loans are for
building houses and not exist-
ing houses because of govern-
ment building requirements
that have to be met.
