Bright Star News
by Mae Miller
A black cloud came rolling in
Monday of last week, and Rains
County got some hard rain, and a
bunch of it fell in a little while. We
got three inches. It has been hot and
humid but cool at night.
Well, it seems like the grasshop-
per has found its way to our place.
We saw a few last week, so there
will be a lot more to follow.
Last Friday night we got a phone
call that has left us very sad and
speechless for words. Francis
(Means) Home passed away in the
Grand Saline hospital. I lost a sister,
a friend and someone I loved very
much. We spent many hours
together and had many good times
that will last forever. God bless her
family. She was a sweet mother.
She was buried in Yoakum Monday
at 2:00 p.m. Buffington Funeral
Home was in charge of arrange-
ments.
The men had breakfast Saturday.
Those present were Earl and Mary
Kernes, H.A. Miller, Arthur Ray
Henson, Lloyd Hopkins, Jerry
Owen, Hollis Whitworth, Avell
Foster, Delbert Yowell and J.W.
Galyean. Lucy Magee and Mae
Miller were missing.
Our prayer concerns are for our
president, our country, our leaders,
our pastor, our church, Alton
Patton, the Francis Home family,
Mae and Artemus Miller, Pat Home
and his children, Mike, Vale and
Machelle Home, Mable Kernes,
Diana Wolfe, Bob and Frankie
Klein, Genny Foster, Fannie and
Joe Strebeck, Daphnia Galyean, our
Vacation Bible School, our gradu-
ates of Rains High School, Tommy
and Bobbie Thompson, Mary
Cross, Opal McAree and Dick
Seaton.
Lucy Magee’s great-granddaugh-
ter, Laken Bowley, was baptized
last Sunday in Lufkin where she
lives.
Lucy Magee and Sally Dittman
went visiting Thursday to see
Linnie Hudgins, Helen Johnston,
Lena Wright, Mrs. Trimble, Oval
McAree and Glenna Glaze.
Sandy Russell visited with Sam
and Odell Hargrove this week.
Martha Bums attended the
Baccalaureate service in the Rains
High School gym in honor of her
granddaughter, Sarah Bums.
Leroy Willeford of Mesquite,
Martha Bums’s brother, visited
with and came to church with her
Sunday.
There will be a bridal shower for
Misty Steed in the fellowship hall
of Bright Star Church Saturday,
May 29, at 2:00 p.m.
I hope Arthur Ray brings me
some ripe tomatoes soon. They sure
would taste good on homemade
hamburgers.
We have some green tomatoes on
the vines, but lice are on our vines
already. I gave them a treatment
with dish soap. I hope it does the
job.
Oleta and Cindy Gowin's visitors
this weekend were Carolyn High,
and Lyle and Donna Zoeller and
children. They spent the night and
went to Sulphur Springs Saturday
to a personal shower for Kathy and
Lynn Potts and Mat De Smith. All
ot Oleta's sisters and families were
there too. Sunday they were all
back to a church in Sulphur Springs
for a wedding shower for Kathy and
Mat. Oleta had a family reunion and
saw all her family together. She
came home and fell out she was so
tired.
This is a new week. We will dig
potatoes and get them out of the wet
ground They are making really
good.
Showers are in the making for
Ttiesday Keep your chin up and
count your many blessings. Re-
member our country in prayer.
CHANGING PACE

PORCHES
Everyone loves a porch, if only in
remembrance of the one at
Grandma's house.
Before the early 1950s, most
houses were built with a porch.
Until recently the houses had no air
conditioning and this kept people
outside. Now porches are returning.
I am so glad. I love poiches, both
back and front porches.
Once upon a time, before televi-
sion and air conditioning there were
porches; big, small, front, back,
side, wrap-arounds and even some
with blue morning glories hanging
like a beautiful veil at the comer
posts.
There is furniture made espe-
cially for porches. I recall the
movies of the rich and famous
where they had giant porches with
wicker or rattan furniture painted
white. That was the most popular
and still is. They had big green pot-
ted plants sitting around on the
porch, large pitchers of lemonade or
iced tea, plates of sugar cookies. I
loved looking at that sort of movie.
I remember my best girl friend
had a large front porch with a swing
on one end of it, high with four or
five steps up. My friend and I have
spent many hours on that porch. If
her parents were out in the cool of
the evening, we would sit on the
steps. When they went in the house
we would swing and talk about
boys way into the night. Then she
would walk me half-way home.
This was about four city blocks.
Along the way was a small garage,
like Goober worked at in Mayberry,
USA. It was a friendly place during
the day to pass waves and hellos
from the workers. Everyone knew
you and your family, but at dark it
was spooky.
We walked in the middle of the
street and half way we turned and
ran like crazy to our homes. I
always wondered what we would
do if the other one yelled for help.
A porch made life interesting
I loved that. She has comfortable
furniture, an over-stuffed sofa and
chairs on on the porch. She watches
TV or reads and has the phone close
by.
Which will it be for you? Front
porch or back porch? Both for me,
thanks.
