Evaluate
Parenting Skills
Realistically
Parents should not more cs
pect themselses to be perfect
than they can expect their chil
dren to be perfect That beliet
is necessary for positise par
enting. says a Texas A&M
University Agirucltural hxten
sion Service home economist
According to family life
specialist Diane Welch, posi-
tive parenting starts when
parents realistically evaluate
their parenting and come to
realize they can do many things
effectively . "The picture ol a
perfect parent, one who is
always kind, patient, losing,
intelligent, and in control, is
impossible to fulfill and may
not be so wonderful anyway
she maintains
For example, parents who
are always patient may nnot be
preparing their children for a
world that contains impatient
people. Welch explains The
important thing is not perfect
parenting at any one time, but
growth toward increased
competence, adds the home
economist.
