What are the odds.....
...of winning the State Championship? Well...not very good when all
is considered. But, each year there are winners, so we know that sooner or
later the best team performances and the best individual athletes will
“come back from Austin with Championship trophies” beating the odds.
This year, the Rains Wildcats Boys’ Track Team went as far as they could
go to try and win “State” and they came mighty close, as they finished
fourth in the state in the 4x400 meter relay last Saturday at Austin. A great
way to end a great season of sports at Rains....and boy, did we ever do well
in the 1999-2000 school year.
With almost 300 3A high schools in Texas, we can be very proud of
what our athletes did this year, culminating in the state track meet on
Saturday. Just think about this....Rains High entered post season play in
football, basketball, and track, with four boys going to Austin to run the
most difficult of the relays...the 1600 meters...and almost won it, finishing
just behind Crane and Burnet High Schools in the closely contested race
won by Elgin HS with a time of 3:18.01. A great big congratulations to
Tommy Potts, Stevie Stigall, Jerry Lane, and Bryan Kelley...you four
carried the colors of Rains to a new high in sports achievement...and thanks
for the tremendous effort.
Last year the Super Bowl was won by St. Louis. Who did they beat?
Who did Florida State beat for the National Football Championship?
Pamevik won the Byron Nelson Golf Classic in Dallas last weekend...who
did he beat for the playoff? Who did the San Antonio Spurs beat last year
for the NBA Title, and who did the Stars beat for the Stanley Cup?
It seems like in our “winner take all" sports environment, we often
forget about the teams and the individuals that “come in second” and what
a shame, for look what it takes to even get to the Super Bowl, the Stanley
Cup, or the State Championship in Austin. Teams not only have to win
their respective leagues and divisions...but then they have to beat other
teams in other divisions and leagues, and so it goes. Or, our boys who not
only had to win in our district, but they had to win at Region...just to get to
State. I am always amazed that we have this “fixation” that we just have to
“win it all” to get the credit...and it just isn’t so. As such, I want to publicly
acknowledge the great job that all of our athletes did, and to let them know
that it is a wonderful accomplishment to get to the place that they did to
achieve such outstanding results in all sports.... and that we are very proud
of them. We wish them the very best in the years to come as they pursue
academics and athletics at the next higher level. These are the moments
that you will never forget, and we want you to know that we will not forget
this year, either. Thanks to all for a great job. You are all winners!
Speaking of winners, the area-wide track honor roll was recently
announced, and Rains did very well. In the boys’ rankings, Bryan Kelley
had the second best time in the 200-meter dash in all high schools in the
area behind Greenville, and was in first place in the area in the 400-meter
race with a season best time of 48.3. Cale Lowther was fifth in the area in
the 110-meter hurdles, with Caddo Mills recording the area best time of
15.1 seconds. In the 4xl00-meter relay, Rains was second behind
Greenville, and also placed second behind Greenville in the 4x400 relay. In
the triple jump, Stevie Stigall was in second place with a jump of 44.3 feet,
and in the high jump, Nathanael Harper finished second with a leap of 6
feet, 4 inches. Quintene Newhouse finished second in the shot put behind
Commerce to round out the Boys Honor Roll. In the girls’ competition,
our 4x100-meter relay team was in third place behind Greenville and
Commerce, and our 4x200-meter relay team and the 4x400 relay team
were in second place behind Greenville in both events. Kristina Mefodeva
finished in fourth place in the Long Jump, and Abisha Birdwell and
Kristina tied for fourth in the triple jump. Way to go....this was thf best
showing ever by Rains, and illustrated that even when we are competing
with the bigger schools, Rains will “hold its own.” Congratulations to all of
you that made the Area Track Honor Roll.
The band wins also....
Well, as some of you readers know, my background is in both sports
and in music, and I get “turned on” by both sporting events and music
events. So, last week I attended the Rains Wildcat Band Annual Band
Banquet. For starters, hats off to Band Director Mark Beatty and his
assistant Cristi King, who, unfortunately, will be leaving us after this
school year. These two have provided outstanding leadership to our band,
and the results have been impressive. Now, let’s set the stage for the
Banquet. First, it was attended by over 200 excited family, friends, and
students...so the setting was “loud and kind of wild.” Then, the Wildcat
Jazz Band got going, and it was one exciting “tune” after another. These
kids are good...and put on quite a show. Trading off between solos with
band background and ensembles featuring drums, trumpets, and great
woodwinds, this group “rocks,” and in turn “rocks the place." There was
not a seat that was not “hopping” to the vibrating rhythms and penetrating
tones of these musicians. Mark Beatty kind of gives them the downbeat,
and off these kids go. It is really fun to hear and watch. Then, they had this
great BBQ prepared by the cafeteria staff, and for those of us that like
BBQ . this was some of the best. And, there helping was the Band Boosters
group. Last week I spoke of the Sports Boosters...and this Band Booster
Group is equally as talented and capable. Through the year they have
conducted various fundraisers, and they are to be given a big “round of
applause” for another job well done. Well, following the dinner with the
homemade desserts...we got into the awards. You can read all of the
individual winners in our other article, but suffice it to say...this was worth
it all to see young musicians starting with the 6th grade and up through the
12th... cheering each other on. This group of students knows what it means
to “stick together.” It was an exciting evening. And, as with all banquets,
the “Outstanding Musicians" were noted, but personally I was thrilled to
see every musician in the program named and honored with a certificate. It
takes a whole band to make a band, and each one of you deserves the credit
you were given. The top award, the John Philip Sousa Award, was given to
clarinetist Sigred Slemp, who also competed a week ago at the Regional
Track Meet. The Director's Award went to Ashley Hobbs...a very popular
recipient. The Drum Major Award went to Kimberly Beasley, and for those
of you at football games...you know who she is. She did a great job at
every game. To each of the Outstanding Band Member Awards for each
grade ..and to those in each grade that received the Most Improved Band
Member Awards, congratulations. What a great way to end a great year!
Thanks to each of you for making our sports year more than just a
sport ...you helped to make it an event. And, tonight we can hear the band
give their final concert of the year ..it will be good, so don’t miss it.
To our athletes and our musicians.. .thanks again for a great year! We
can’t wait to get going in August with the fall sports...so from all of us at
the Leader, we wish you the very best...enjoy your summer , and don't
forget what you did for us this year.....you made it a great year! The
winning tradition you were part of will continue!

African-American children
more likely to have H.
pylori infection
A new study shows that African-
American children are more likely
to get a bacteria that can cause
stomach ulcers.
Researchers at Baylor College of
Medicine found race to be a deter-
mining factor in Helicobacter pylori
infection, even when socioeco-
nomic status was consistent. H.
pylori is a bacteria that can cause
gastritis, gastric and duodenal
ulcers or gastric cancer.
Results of the study showed that
40 percent of the African-American
children and 11 percent of the white
children were infected by age
seven. The risk of carrying the
infection to early adulthood was 78
percent.
Dr. Hoda Malaty, an associate
professor of medicine, said “Al-
though many features of this bacte-
ria have been identified, the mode
of transmission is still unknown.
We are 99 percent sure that any
adult infected with H. pylori
acquired the bacteria when they
were young.”
