By Skerry Webb
Texas Dairy Review
After hosting two full days of
more than 80 exhibitors and mak-
ing sure everything went off on
schedule, committee members arc
beginning to catch their breath
and enjoy the success of the 1992
Dublin Dairy A Farm Equipment
show held Oct. 21 and 22.
Exhibitors participating in the
trade show came from near and
far to display and discuss their
wares during the two-day event,
providing show-gofirs with an
array of the newest dairy and
farm equipment, services, and
supplies available.
On Tucs. evening before the
show officially opened the next
morning, the Dublin Chamber of
Commerce hosted a hospitality
get-together at a local eating
establishment located between
Slephenvillc and Dublin where
exhibitors were able to meet each
other and the members of the
show's committee.
The next day began bright and
early at 7:30 a.m. with an exhibi-
tor's breakfast. The day’s exhibits
opened promptly at IQ a.m. to
those who attended the show and
were accommodated by lh^ many
food items provided by the Texas
Women for Dairies concession
stand. A barbecue dinner, cooked
to perfection by Stcphenvillc's
Dean Taylor Catering, offered a
full-scale good ol’ Tcxas-stylc din-
ner to about 400 folks.
The barbecue was followed at
7:30 p.m. by the Texas Holstein
Association'sale and silent auc-
tion. The sale raised nearly
$80,000 which will help to fund
the 19% National Holstein Asso-
ciation meeting in Texas. Crafts
sold for about $4,000.
Approximately 60 people atten-
ded Thursday’s seminars spon-
sored by The Dairyman Maga-
zine. First to speak was Dr. Mike
Gamroth of Oregon State
University, followed by Dr. Calvin
Willis who spoke on dry cow
management.
Around 2:30 p.m., U.S. Rep.
Charles Stenholm appeared at the
show with campaign members
where he spoke to a crowd of
show-goers and exhibitors.
The Pedal Pushers Contest got
olT to a big start late that after-
noon proving to be one of the
major highlights of the show.
Children from ages 3-8 yrs. okl
participated in a mini-tractor-pull
extravaganza that thrilled parents,
grandparents and many onlook-
ers.
First place winners of the trac-
tor pull were awarded the Ford
and John Deere pedal pusher
tractors. Second and third place
winners received trophies.
Winners of the tractor pull in
the three-five year old category
were Mackic Bays, Jacob Viss and
Rein Posthumus. Five to six year
old winners were Michael Win-
sett, Randall Viss and Tanner
Thompson. Seven to eight year
old winners were Rachael Valhui-
zen, Clint Kelley and Chase Bell-
man.
A Nintendo game for selling
the most sponsorships for the
tractor pull was awarded to Emi-
lye Willis.
On Friday, many exhibitors and
chamber members participated in
a golf tournament held at Par
Country Guh located on Proctor
Lake in Comanche. The golf
tournament began with a 9 a.m.
breakfast where Stale Rep. Ron
Lewis (D-Mauriccville) Dist. I')
and chairman of the Natural
Resources Committee, was guest
speaker and participated in the
golf tournament.
Lewis told dairymen that in
order to obtain the sup|>ori from
slate officials they tire seeking,
they must make representatives
more aware of what role the dairy
industry plays in Texas.
He said that up until recently,
dairymen have done a poor job in
educating him, the governor, and
others about the vital importance
of the dairy industry to the stale
and what problems they have
faced regarding stale regulatory
stipulations. He said dairymen
must make their story known and
their presence known to keep
officials informed of what’s going
on.
He said the only reason he
knew anything at all is because of
his acquaintenacc with Brad
Bouma, a dairyman located in El
Paso.
Tee lime was at 10 a.m. with 55
entries divided into 4 person
teams. Awards were given to the
first, second and third place win-
ners and cash prizes given for
other golfing feats as the longest
drive, won by Martha Slronna.
