Pastor Diller’s sermon on Sunday
morning was “Life Worth Living,”
taken from the gospel of Luke,
12:13-21. We were all so happy to
see Helen and Anna Diller back
from Wyoming again, although
Anna is making plans to leave for
college right away. It just doesn’t
seem right when they are gone for
so long at a time.
A special Charge Conference has
been called for this Friday, August
17, at 12:00 noon. This is a very
important meeting and we ask
everyone to attend.
We are still in need of a nursery
worker. It is a paid position. Please
call David Diller or Donna Harder
at the church, 473-2411, if you are
interested.
The Sunshine Circle is selling
raffle tickets for a beautiful quilt,
$1, or six for $5. See Judy Claunch
or any of the Sunshine ladies. All
the money they raise goes toward
good causes in the church and in the
community.
Updated directories are in the
front entry hall. New e-mail
addresses, or changes in phone
numbers and addresses may be
placed in the offering plate for
future changes.
Don’t forget the Rains County
Good Samaritans. They are still in
need.
The church office will be open on
Monday and Thursday this week.
Happy birthday this week to
Nathan Sullivan and Tommye Sue
Griffin. Happy anniversary to O.J.
and Wilma Wade and David and
Helen Diller.
Congratulations to Eddie and
Katrina Elliott, who have a new
baby girl, Elissa Edith Elliott, bom
Tuesday, August 7, at 5:01 p.m. She
weighed 6 lbs. and 10 ozs. and was
20 inches long. God bless you, little
Elissa. I know your big sister
Savannah is so proud of you as
well.
We have enjoyed having W.D.
Sorsby home from Georgia for the
last two weeks. I know Sam and
Judy have been happy to have him
home again and will miss him. He
left Sunday afternoon to return to
Atlanta.
We offer our sincerest sympa-
thies to the family of Marie Hass
and the family of Mark Fenter. Our
prayers will be with both families
for comfort after their loss. God
bless you all as you go though this
difficult time.
We will have another practice for
the Christmas Cantata on Tuesday,
August 14, at 7:00 p.m. Again, all
are welcome to join us, whether you
are a member of another church or
are not a member of any church.
This will be a county-wide cantata
and we would love to have everyone
possible join in. Regular practices
will be every other Tuesday.
The Hartogs gave a praise report
that Marvin’s back has been better.
We are all thankful for that.
A special prayer request was
asked in church for Larry Cul-
berson, Sr., who was rushed to
Hopkins County Hospital at 1:00
a.m. Sunday. He was still in I.C.U.
on Sunday morning on a ventilator.
The staff there was trying to stabi-
lize him so he could be transferred
to Baylor. The family was very
grateful that Blake Cooper gave
him CPR as they rushed him to the '
hospital and kept him alive until
they reached the hospital. All the
paramedics and hospital staff said
he would not have made it without
Blake’s TLC.
Prayer has also been asked for
Erica Sorsby, Kay and Randall
Robertson, Beverly Woolgar who
has Lou Gehrig’s disease, Robert
Walston, Derek Harder, Stephanie
Woodall, Nelson Harder, Lonnie
Hedley, Wilma Snyder who will
have or has just had (I don’t know
which) a knee replacement, John
and Verla Souther, the upcoming
Charge Conference, the needed
nursery worker, all teachers and stu-
dents as they return to school,
Ronald Jack Edwards, the Dukes,
Tony, Trina and Anthony Gonzalez,
Jean Nichol, Mary Sheppard,
Everett Runte and family, Ronnie
and Nancy Fenter and family, Betty
Liles and family, Omega Payne who
is Vedia Dougherty’s sister and who
will be having tests made, Dee Ann
Jones and family, Joshua Allen and
family, Jeanette Edwards, Rev. Tom
Wilbanks, Gary Darrow, D’Lee
Orbin, Donna and Sam Sorsby, Jr.,
Andrea Quantie, Inez Hughes, Alba
Humphrey, Betty Stanley, Cleo
Mills, Dean Robertson, Margaret
Briggs, Elizabeth Barfield, Daylan
Burns, Charles Daniels, Charles
Gentry, Carla and Cynthia Ramirez,
Betty Holman, Maria Lou Smith,
Margaret Ann Sisk, Horace Choice,
Charlie Marney, Pat Horne, the
Masakowskis, the Warrs, and
Thelma Kolasci.
Please pray for the children of
divorced families, who are always
without one of the parents they
love.
Our scripture this week is, “So
shall my work be that goes forth
from my mouth; it shall not return
to me empty, but it shall accomplish
that which 1 purpose, and prosper in
the thing for which I sent it.”
Isaiah 55:11
God bless you all, have a great
week, and come to visit our church.
Revival meeting
at Daugherty
There will be a revival meeting at
the Daugherty Baptist Church
August 19-24. Ministers who will
preach include: Arvis Asbill, Clyde
Morrill, and David Smith.
All services will begin at 7:00
p.m. Everyone is invited.
The church is located near the
intersection of FM 514 and FM
275. Wayne Wolfe is the pastor.
Where Everybody Is Somebody
and Jesus Christ is Lord
by Jimmie Curtis
‘There is nothing more satisfying
to a Christian than to go to the
house of the Lord to worship, to
hear the word of God preached, and
to come away feeling better than
they did when they came. Sunday
was such a day here at White Oak. I
am truly grateful to God that I am
still able to attend church and to
take part in the worship of Him.
The opening prayer Sunday
morning was by Earl Stokes.
The singing was led by Sam
Williams. The musicians were
Margaret Silks on the piano, Bill
Lowery on standard guitar, and
Gary Graham on bass guitar.
The announcements were given
by Mike O’Conner: the usual
Wednesday night service with a
business meeting to follow; on
August 18 the youth will be having
a car wash and bake sale.
We were reminded to pray for
those on our prayer list, especially
Martha Courson who is gravely ill,
Cecil Deel and her husband
Tommy, Lou Bevill who is having
shoulder problems, our pianist
Charles Corry, Cindy Roden,
daughter of Bill and Barbara Roden
who is going for tests on Monday,
and continue to pray for a pastor,
and pray for God’s will in your life.
The offertory prayer was by
Murray Hudson. The special was by
Jimmie Curtis, who sang a medley
of several well-known songs.
The message was by Bro. Wayne
Eadie, taken from Judges chapter
11:26-? entitled “I’ve Come Too Far
to Tum Back Now.” It was a soul-
stirring message that challenged all
of us. At the invitation several went
to the altar to pray.
The closing prayer was by
Murray Hudson.
The evening service was opened
with a prayer by Gary Graham.
The singing was led by Sam
Williams, accompanied by Charles
Corry on the piano and Bill Lowery
on the guitar.
A special was sung by a group
consisting of Mildred Nichols,
Sonya Norton, Sam Williams and
Bill Lowery, accompanied on the
piand by Charles Corry.
The sermon was entitled “Ain’t a
Single Thing Changed After
Twenty-four Years.” Bro. Eadie did
a wonderful job relating his life
story, telling how and when he was
saved and when he entered the min-
istry. We all enjoyed his message,
one of love and understanding.
The closing prayer was by Chad
Eadie, son of Bro. Wade Eadie.
May God watch over you in the
coming week, and remember God
loves you and so do I.
Faith Baptist Church
by Lorine Burnes
We have had a great week at
Faith this week. Tuesday evening at
6:30 p.m. we had a deacons’ and
men’s meeting. The Ladies’
Auxiliary also met and cooked the
evening meal; of course, we invited
the men to eat with us. We all had a
good time eating and taking care of
our business.
Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m.
we had our prayer meeting. We had
a lot of good singing and then Bro.
Jimmy brought us a message enti-
tled “The Matchless Love of God”
from I John 3:1 and Romans 5:1-9.
It was a good sermon. Following
the sermon we had our monthly
business meeting, and Bro. V.C.
closed with prayer. Then we had
coffee and cookies and good fel-
lowship.
Thursday evening at 7:00 p.m.
we had visitation. “What shall we
then say to these things? If God be
for us, who can be against us.”
Romans 8:31
Our Sunday morning service
began with Lloyd bringing the
devotional from I Corinthians 1:18-
25 entitled “The Foolishness of
Preaching.” He also closed with
prayer. Tommy taught the adult
class from Jeremiah 26:8-15 enti-
tled “The Unpopular Message.” We
began our worship service with
some good old gospel songs with
Jay leading the singing, Mary at the
piano playing with our band. Bro.
Jimmy made the announcements.
Odell and Virgie took up the offer-
ing. We had no birthdays or
anniversaries.
Lois brought the special music.
We welcome our visitors and hope
they will come again. Bro. Jimmy’s
message came from Acts 5:42 enti-
tled “The Main Business of the
Church.” He preached a good mes-
sage, it really hit home. He stepped
on a lot of toes, especially mine.
J.D. closed with prayer.
Our new church is coming along
real good. They don’t like much
having all the metal on. Then we
will all have to go to work and get it
finished.
Be much in prayer this week for
Helen Moss, Irene Burns, and
Henry Ramsey. They are not feeling
well at all.
As our evening service began, the
band and Mary played a beautiful
instrumental. Then Jay led a few
songs, and Mary Miller and Henry
Ramsey brought our special music.
They both did a great job. Bro.
Jimmy’s message came from II
Timothy 3:5 entitled “Useless
Religion.” Bro. Jay closed with
prayer.
Remember to pray for the sick,
the lonely, the lost and each other
and our new church that we might
do His will in everything we do.
Have a great week and may God
bless each of you.
“For God so loved the world that
he gave his only begotten son, that
whosoever believeth in him should
not perish, but have everlasting
life.” John 3:16
by Avis Huizar
“He that hath the Son hath life;
and he that hath not the Son of God
hath not life.” I John 5:12
As we praise God for His bless-
ings, let us not forget to pray for
those who are sick or hurting in
some other way. Some of those in
need of prayer are Mark Fenter’s
family and friends, Christy and her
daughter, Mary Smith, Terry
Fitzgerald, Matt and Cassie’s baby,
Alice Northcutt, Aaron Parker,
Helen Moss, and George Humes.
We thank God for this wonderful
rain and the short breaks in the heat.
It is good to see the grass becoming
green again.
Thanks to Brother Parker for all
the hard work he did in stripping
and re-finishing the floor tile in our
fellowship hall. He and Sister
Parker do a lot of work around the
church that we may fail to mention,
but we all appreciate them. Sister.
Parker did a wonderful job decorat-
. ing for Courtney and Randy’s
shower.
We were glad to have visitors in
our service Sunday night, and
enjoyed a special song provided by
Shirley Hali.
On Wednesday night, Brother
Parker’s message, “I Pledge Alleg-
iance,” was based upon I John 2:15-
18. Sunday evening’s message was
from Luke 5:17-26, “The Power of
Christ to Save and to Heal.” On
Sunday morning, Brother Parker
encouraged us to “Be an
Overcomer,” using the scripture text
I John 4:1-4.
Sandra Parker’s birthday is
Thursday, August 16, and we wish
her a happy one.

“My brother always asks me why
I keep trying to sing. I don’t really
have a good voice. I don’t know, I
just ask the Holy Spirit to use me.
At the fifth Sunday singing in Point
I just asked the Lord to let me know
if he wanted me to sing. I didn’t
even bring my guitar in or anything.
I asked Him to give me a song and
He did. I mean, I don’t perform or
anything. I just let God use me and
I sang from the bottom of my soul,”
Larry Birdwell was telling us as. we
sat around the table talking after
church Sunday night. “We noticed,”
I replied. “Do you read the Rains
County Leader?” I asked. “No,” he
said. We all laughed because we do,
and then I told him that somebody
wrote about him singing for fifth
Sunday in Point. For those of you
who missed hearing him, and those
who are begging to hear him again,
he has promised Bro. Alfaro to sing
this coming Sunday afternoon at the
dedication service for our refur-
bished fellowship hall and new
kitchen. Don’t miss hearing him
this time.
Bro. Boyle and Bro. Alfaro have
been planning the dedication ser-
vice for several weeks. Bro. Jose
Amaya of the Hispanic Baptist
Church in Greenville will bring the
message, which of course, will be
bilingual. For those of you who are
not acquainted with Bro. Amaya, he
is a pastor, seminary teacher, and
well-known popular Baptist speaker
and moderator. You don’t want to
miss your chance to hear him while
he is here in Point. Believe me! The
dedication service will be held at
6:00 p.m. this Sunday at the mission
with a time of fellowship to follow
in the fellowship hall. The First
Baptist Church and Emory Baptist,
our sponsors, will have a joint ser-
vice with us. All of you who sup-
port us with your love, prayers, tal-
ents, time, gifts, and money, come
and join us for this special time of
dedication and fellowship. We
would love to have a chance to
thank you personally. If you haven’t
gotten involved yet, now is the time.
Just do it!
We are gearing up for a bigger
and better school year for our adult
education classes. Our computer
programs, earphones, and micro-
phones in English as a second lan-
guage classes are ready and waiting
for computers. Juan Carlos has been
trying out one of the new programs
and we can’t pull him away from it.
He says that it is more fun than
Nintendo and a lot more challeng-
ing. The little library is growing and
expanding into the hallway. Bro.
Amaya has promised us a Spanish
teacher for a Spanish class this year,
which has been a big request for the
last several years. The air condi-
tioner in the blue van is suddenly
miraculously working and we’re
ready for drivers. Jose, Miquel, and
Juan Carlos, our wonderful, faithful
young people, have volunteered to
ride in the three vans and translate.
The classes will begin this Saturday
night at 7:00 p.m. If you or some-
one you know need a ride, please
call the church office or the restau-
rant.
Bro. Alfaro’s Sunday message
was entitled “The Responsibilities
of Bible-Believing Christians,” tak-
en from Matthew 25:40 "... what-
ever you did for one of the least of
these brothers of mine, you did for
. me.”
Prayer meeting
There will be a prayer meeting
for the revival at Daugherty Baptist
Church on Wednesday evening,
August 15, at 7:00 p.m. at the home
of Arlie and Gwen Holman.
Everyone is invited.
****
Kay Player was a recent visitor in
the office to renew her subscription
to the Rains County Leader.
