Second Crop Irish Potatoes.
(A. & M. Extension Service.!
It is a growing practice throughout
the Southern States to grow a second
or fall crop of Irish potatoes. The
increasing popularity of the Irish po-
lato as a staple article of diet and
the ease with whies the second crop
cau be kept through the winter should
commend to the Texas farmers the
growing of a fill crop of Irish po-
tatoes.
The second crop is usually planted
on the same land where the tlrst crop
grew or where cucumbers or some
other early crop grew. Many use trie
seed from the first crop, but seed
from other sources can be used. Use
an early variety. Irish cobbler is one
of the popular early varieties. It will
require front 90 to 120 days to ma-
ture a crop, much depending upon the
amount of rainfall during the growing
| period. Plant to take advantage of the
rainfall of the season. Some growers
in Texas recommend June planting
Such early planting it :s claimed teudj
to overcome the seasonal disadvan-
tages.
The greatest disadvantage to over-
come is tite lack of moisture. The 1
