Texas Eagles return home
By BONNIE BURCH
Rains County Leader staff
The Eagles have landed - last
Saturday at D/FW International
Airport. Eight 50-years-plus vol-
leyball players, a 32-year-old
coach, and a nine-year-old
granddaughter flew home after
players participated in the Senior
Olympics in Hampton Roads,
Virginia, on June 3-4. Approxi-
mately 10,000 senior athletes
attended the games, participating
in various sporting events.
The Texas Eagles - AKA "The
Little Ol’ Ladies’ Team" - repre-
sented Emory, Rains County and
the state of Texas at the National
Senior Games Association event.
No medals were awarded to the
team; however, members consid-
ered themselves winners in many
areas.
Firstly, the Eagles came home
healthy as they “played through
the pain.” All members - Bonnie
Burch (yours truly), Judy
Claunch, Jean McEnturfT, Mar-
garet McNear, Mary Nixon,
Becky Smith, Judy Sorsby, and
Mary White - enjoyed participat-
ing in five, best of-three-game
matches against teams from
Maryland, Florida. Missouri,
Delaware and Illinois. White
wore a brace on her injured knee;
McNear wore a brace on her
nerve-damaged wrist; Burch
taped her right index finger,
which was smashed in the
Leader's very old back door
prior to departure. During one
match. Judy Claunch took a
spike to the face but sustained no
serious injury.
Secondly, the team played bet-
ter and scored more points than
ever before. The Eagles were real
contenders in at least two match-
es, and with just a little more
luck could have been winners. In
order to qualify for the Senior
Olympics, the team had previ-
ously played against tough teams
in Texas tournaments. Since this
was the first year for the Eagles
to participate, members assumed
that all teams were as good as the
Texas teams, which was not the
case.
Thirdly and more importantly,
the team. Coach Cherry Krantz,
and McEnturff’s granddaughter,
Tamara Mixson, had fun. A
condo on Virginia Beach was
rented for a week, and everyone
enjoyed sightseeing in that area,
Norfolk, Portsmouth, and
Williamsburg. Rosemary Freeze,
who lived in Emory for 18 years,
hosted the entire group for din-
ner and visiting in her beautiful
Hampton home.
Furthermore, the group played
games, walked on the beach, ate
wonderful seafood, shopped,
napped, and read books. Tamara
said she felt like she had eight
grandmothers and an aunt; the
team felt like "big winners.”
