Volunteers needed for
programs for elderly
Many people believe that once a
person enters a nursing home or
assisted living facility, they lose
their rights or their rights are
altered in some manner; however,
residents in long-term care contin-
ue to have rights and these rights
need to be protected. Living with
others in a group creates the need
to accommodate differences, but
residents do not automatically give
up their basic rights. Since many
residents do not receive visitors
and have no close relatives, it
decreases opportunities for them to
express their needs and concerns
with those who could care and
advocate for them.
Volunteer ombudsmen receive
and investigate complaints made
by, or on behalf of, long-term care
residents. Complaints involving
serious abuse or neglect are report-
ed to the appropriate agency.
Confidentiality is maintained and
no information is released without
permission of the resident or his or
her legal guardian. Through visits
to their assigned facility, volun-
teers have the opportunity to affirm
the value of each resident and to
give residents an opportunity to
express concerns.
According to the Texas
Department of Aging and
Disabilities Services, the Texas
Ombudsman Program received
over 61,000 complaints from nurs-
ing and assisted living facility resi-
dents or their families in 2005.
Over 53,000 of these complaints
were resolved.
The Area Agency on Aging of
North Central Texas Ombudsman
, Program is seeking warmhearted
volunteers to serve as nursing
home or assisted living facility
advocates in our community. After
receiving a free 34-hour training
and certification, volunteers will
visit their assigned facility to advo-
cate for residents and to assure
they receive quality care. No
experience is required but volun-
teers must be at least 18-years-of-
age.
If you have two hours per week
to make a difference in someone’s
life or would like more informa-
tion on the Ombudsman Program,
contact Lisa Walker at the Area
Agency on Aging, North Central
Texas Council of Governments at
1-800-272-3921 or email Pat
Borgfeldt at
