Ask the Jy\ ayor
By James "Red" Seigars, Mayor of Dublin
Did you miss it? What a ride and what a day. The Doodlebug
Excursion was a great success and people are already talking about more
of these trips in the liiture. 1 know it was a great day for many of our
seniors who took a trip down memory lane and a special day for me as
we all made it official - my 72nd birthday.
I was questioned as to why we do not appoint someone to fill the
vacant Ward II council seat. The precedence for the past 8 years has been
to leave it vacant until the next election and let the candidate earn the seat
as compared to us handing it to someone. If I recall correctly, no one ran
against Paul in the last election.
Monday night we held two committee meetings. One on the Dublin
Municipal airport and one on the Garbage proposal. Committee's can
only make recommendations to the council for the full Councils action.
In last weeks paper on page 10 Sec. A Mac wrote perhaps what I said
but was not what 1 had in my notes nor what I was supposed to say. My
complete statement should have been "Mr. Lee told me that Ms Prater
does a much better job than many of the others from Dublin who have
served on this board." Sorry, that was my error.
1 want to thank Mr. George Servers from the United Calvary
Pentecostal Church for offering the invocation at last weeks regular City
Council meeting.
The city manager and I have discussed our streets on many occasions
and as stated in last week's paper this list is only a beginning and some
streets listed may not make the final selection. However, this budget year
we were able to put $20,000 in street maintenance, and $60,000 into
street paving. Most of us know it will be a good many years before we
will be pleased with the condition of our streets. But we are working on
it.
If your pet is impounded by the City, and is there for 1 day it will be a
$20 impounded fee and $5 for each subsequent day. It only cost $20 to
adopt an animal. So please comply with the law and keep your dogs
fenced in or contained.
Did you know that a building permit fee to build a house with a
SI 00,000 valuation would cost you $499.50? This fee along with the
w ater and sewer tap fees and several other fees will be wavered when you
build a residential home. These savings will only be on the table for a
limited time. Act now and beat your neighbor. Ordinance # 9-12-05-5
lists these fees. Any ordinance can be obtained, for a small fee, at City
hall.
It took many volunteers to pull off the train ride Saturday. Just another
example of how things all come together when you volunteer. Buy
Dublin first. Every dollar counts, every penny counts, be a team player.
Have a great week and look after each other.
Correction
In last weeks What’s New in Business story titled “Bringing
something ‘exotic’ to Dublin,” Mrs. Kathy William’s mother was
accidentally identified as Miss Kate instead of Mrs. Kate, and
although her mother was 67 years old when they moved to Dublin,
she was not in her old age. Also, Bill and Kathy’s daughter and
son-in-law have moved to the area, instead of their daughter and
son. We are sorry for the mistake.

This & That
If you missed the chance to take a train ride on the Doodlebug this past
Saturday, you missed a real treat.
I'm a train buff and have been all my life. There's just something
magical about hearing that whistle sound and the sound of the train as it
rumbles along.
Right now, another train trip is being planned for sometime in May so
be aware so you can get your reservations made as soon as possible. Tm
sure tickets will sell out as quickly as they did this time.
It was nice to see so many people from out of town and many former
residents who came back to town just to ride the train.
A special thanks to all those who worked so hard to make this a reality.
I would like to name names but once I start that, somebody will get left
out. It was a great effort on the part of folks from all three towns, the
chambers of commerce and Economic Development Corporations.
I could go on and on about it but there was nothing like being there.

At a recent Dublin school board meeting, I did not report - simply
because I forgot it - that a young man asked the board for a change in the
dress code.
Tanner Shaw asked the school board to allow patches to be worn on
clothes. That's kind of a new thing that is in style with the teens. In my day
it was" a necessity as we couldn't afford to replace clothes just because they
had a tear and we wouldn't be caught dead wearing clothes with holes or
tears in them.
(My favorite pair of jeans now has a knee patch put on there by Blanch
Pendleton after I tore it playing baseball this summer).
Apparently Tanner had his grandmother put patches on his pants and
then at school he was sent home to change. The good news is that the dress
code has been changed. You can't wear clothes with holes in them like
some people would like to do but you can wear patches. I can't believe
people pay big buct^Tor frayed clothes with holes in them.
Hooray for Tanner. He stood up for what he believed in and made a
difference. I appreciate young people taking a stand. He probably didn't
believe he could get the rule changed but he said his piece.
And I appreciate school personnel being willing to make reasonable
changes.
*********************************************************
I don't know how many people realize that a number of men from
Dublin and this area are now working for FEMA on hurricane relief all
over Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi.
Plus, several DHS graduates from this last year may have found careers
working for Southern Bell.
These are real good jobs, plus learning a profession. In the meantime,
I'm sure the situation here is like everywhere else in that there seems to be
a shortage of manpower to get jobs done.
*********************************************************
This is really a busy time of year and everything is exciting. I enjoy
Halloween and seeing all the kids dressed up. Be aware that safe trick-or-
treat is Oct. 31 at local businesses. It will run from 4:30 to 6 p.m. with
costumes to be judged at Comer Lot at 5:30.
f We're working on getting a good sound system for downtown for
parades and such as well as playing Christmas music. I hope everyone has
noticed all the colorful banners around town.
Plus our Lady Lions will be in the volleyball playoffs. The competition
in district has not been real stiff so Tm concerned that our team has not
been whipped into shape like they need to be to face stiff play-off teams.
Coach Clark has done everything she can and then she will schedule
practice games, I'm sure with those headed to the playoffs. It helps to have
stiff competition. The Lady Lions are really good and they are exciting to
watch. Go out and give them your support.
Our Lion football team also needs our support. It has not been a good
year. It just seems that everything that could go wrong has happened. But,
they played hard and we should back them all the way. Although it has not
been a good year, it has been interesting. And who knows, we can still get
to the play-offs. Go Lions!
Thanks for reading.

Perry pledges $10 million for border security
Gov. Rick Perry on Oct. 12 proposed a security plan for the Texas-
Mexico border region, saying, "In this post 9-11 era, there is no such
thing as homeland security without border security."
Texas shares 1,200 miles of border with Mexico. Perry's $10 million
plan would beef up the presence of law enforcement and improve
communications among various law enforcement entities in the region.
"I offer this plan, not because it is the state's responsibility to control
the federal border, but because the state of Texas cannot wait for the
federal government to implement needed border security measures," he
said.
Perry praised the federal government for providing 1,000 new border
patrol agents and for investing in surveillance at crossings, but said
Congress must do more.
TV ads blast DeLay prosecutor
A group claiming to have no connection to indicted former U.S.
House Majority Leader Tom DeLay of Sugar Land lashed back at Travis
County District Attorney Ronnie Earle with television commercials that
portray the state's top ethics prosecutor as a vicious dog.
Washington, D.C.-based Free Enterprise Fund sponsored the
commercial, which aired in Austin first but later may be broadcast in
other markets.
Meanwhile, Earle filed a new subpoena seeking DeLay's phone
records from Sept. 1 to Dec. 31, 2002, and documents related to the
purchase of a 2004 minivan.
DeLay and two associates have been indicted by Travis County grand
juries on charges of money laundering and conspiracy to violate Texas
law in the months leading up to the November 2002 state election.
DeLay's lawyers have called the charges politically motivated and
baseless.
Search for library site continues
A search committee in charge of finding a site for a proposed George
W. Bush presidential library has narrowed the field of possibilities to
Baylor University, Southern Methodist University, the University of
Texas at Dallas and Texas Tech University.
The University of Texas at Austin and Texas A&M University were
dropped from the list.
The library search committee includes Bush staffers Karl Rove,
Andrew Card and Harriet Miers; the president's youngest brother Marvin
Bush; Secretary of Commerce Don Evans; and U.S. ambassador to
France Craig Stapleton.
Newspaper challenges Kinky
On Oct. 14, the San Antonio Express-News challenged Kinky
Friedman to write a gubernatorial campaign song that clarifies his views
on current issues.
The Hill Country musician, author and animal-rescue rancher hopes
to run for governor in November 2006.
But to earn a spot on the ballot he must collect 45,000 signatures from
registered voters who skip the March 2006 Republican and Democratic
primaries.
Gov. Perry is running for reelection and is expected to face Texas
Comptroller Carole Keeton Strayhom in the GOP primary. Former
congressman and broadcast journalist Chris Bell of Houston is
campaigning for the Democratic nomination.
Other Highlights
* Gov. Perry appointed Corpus Christi lawyer Colleen McHugh to the
University of Texas System Board of Regents for a term to expire in
2011. She replaces Woody Hunt of El Paso, whose six-year term expired.
* Nine people are being considered for the position of executive
director of the Texas Lottery Commission. One of the nine is Dawn
Nettles, a private citizen who has monitored the agency for many years
in her publication Lotto Report. She contended that Lotto Texas jackpots
were inflated, and doing so led to the resignation of previous executive
director Reagan Greer last July.
* Former President Bill Clinton is scheduled to speak about his
autobiography, My Life, Oct. 29 at the 10th annual Texas Book Festival
on the state Capitol grounds. The
festival runs Oct. 28-30.
