Another famous Dublinite
Fess Parker
Dublin is well known for the many famous people
who have grown up here.
While it is common knowledge that many of
those famous people - Ben Hogan. Truek Stephens,
Harry Tompkins, among others - were horn or grew
up in Dublin, the fact that Fess Parker was horn here
is not as well publicized. Not much is known about
his growing up here and many people may not even
know who he is.
But. he is now in the news as the one who made
Davy Crockett, king of the wild frontier, a house-
hold name as he portrayed Davy in the Walt Disney
series on TV during the I950's.
He became so famous, that owning a coon skin
cap became the dream of every young person. It is
said that at the height of the Crockett craze 5,000
coonskin caps a day were sold, raising the cost of
the fur from 25-cents a pound to $8.
It's now the 50th anniversary of the Disneyland
episodes that launched Davy-mania. Last week,
i Parker was in Washington. D.C. to donate one of his original caps as well as a buckskin ensemble
I from his Daniel Boone series (1964-1970) to the Smithsonian.
* His name became synonymous with Davy Crockett. It was his portrayal of Crockett and what
t happened at the Alamo, that helped gain fame for that legendary battle.
j Now, there is a new movie out about the Alamo and Parker, w ho turns 80 in August, was invited
* to appear at the premier in San Antonio. Disney's epic retelling opened last Friday with Billy Bob
? Thornton as Crockett. Parker visited the Austin set w here the movie was filmed last spring and met
} the heir to his most famous role.
It is popular to keep up with former Dublin residents and it's nice to note that Parker turned his
stardom into financial gain through real estate deals and hotel ventures as he now owns Wine
[; Country Inn and Spa in Los Olivos, CA, and owns a ranch next to Michael Jackson.
