I Just noticed as I sat down
to write this column, that this
will marie a full year that I
have written One Reporter's
Kamblings. I would Just like
to thank everyone that reads
the column and the positive
feedback I’ve received so far.
These columns really have
become one of the more fun
aspects of the Job. Of more
importance, my parents
celebrated their 30th
anniversary Monday so Td
like to take this opportunity
to publicly congratulate Norm
and Sandra Gaudette on
reaching their pearl
anniversary. (And, you know,
thank them for getting
together so I can be alive and
stuff.)
Judging by the store
decorations that have been
up since Nov. 1, I’d say
Christmas is just around the
comer. This of course means
more togetherness, good
cheer, good food and perhaps
a present or two if you've
been a good girl or boy. There
is also one more time-honored
tradition established by
television: holiday
programming. As Christmas
draws nearer, just try to find
a time when there’s not a
Christmas special around.
There are tons of them and
the best mintage to evoke the
best parts of the holiday iind
boil them down into a
compar t time frame.
Millions have turned It’s a
Wonderful life, A Charlie
Brown Christmas, Miracle on
34th Street and How the
Grindi Stole Christmas into
staples shown every
December. Ted Turner
proclaims every Dec 25 "A
Christmas Story” day on one
of his networics, replaying
how Ralphie gets Ms Red
Rider BB gun again and
again.
I have grown up with these
of r
and have a lot of respect for
them, but for some, the
sentiments come on too
strong or they have simply'
been played too many times
and people can’t stand to
watch them another time
With this in mind, here are
five non traditional holiday'
movies that I have grown to
love and watch every year
while getting into the
Christmas Spirit.
5. Scrooged- There are
dozens of adaptations of
Charles Dickens’ immortal
classic, A Christmas Carol,
but I give this one honors for
some daring choices and
great casting which includes
Bill Murray, Carol Kane and
Karen Allen. Richard Donner
deftly takes the tale of
Ebenezer Scrooge into the
arena of network television
lambasting the corporate big-
wigs while retaining all of the
adventure and heart of the
original. The film breaks the
fourth wall in several ways as
Bill Murray’s character is
producing a live telecast of A
Christmas Carol on Christmas
Eve and seems to speak
direc tly to the audience in the
end.
4. Millions- This British film
directed by Danny Boyle tells
the tale of two brothers who
find a bag of Pound notes as

England is about to convert
to the Euro. The boys are very
different in the ways they are
dealing with the death of
their mother. One is all about
investments and
commercialism while his
younger Mother believes in
acts of charity and spends his
time studying all the saints.
There is a lot of engaging
drama that unfolds as they
leant where the money came
from and struggle to do
something worthwhile with it
fore the conversion
and it is completely
ted.
Sdssorhands-
Tim Burton puts Ms signature
visuals to good use in this
American folktale starring
Johnny Depp and Winona
Ryder. Although Christmas is
only mentioned a few times,
the movie does evoke the
season as a grandmother
explains to her granddaughter
how it came to snow in their
dosed suburban community
and of a withdrawn
manufactured man with
scissors for hands introduced
to sodety for the first time in
his life.
2. National Lampoon's
Christmas Vacation- This
modem classic penned by
John Hughes satirizes the
family dynamic with great
results but is still crowd-
pleasing thanks to the warmth
of the characters. Chevy
Chase stars again as Ciark
Griswold who is trying his
best to host the perfect
Christmas that's constantly
hampered by common
problems with in-laws and
electridty that get out of
hand Although you feel bad,
you can’t help but laugh when
it finally gets to be too much
and he loses Ms cool in a
moment of over-the-top
manic delivery.
LGrendins- Directed by Joe
Dante, this tale of mischievous
and potentially murderous
creatures might seem like a
bad choice far a holiday list,
but everything about it
screams Christmas. The
movie starts with a father
buying a unique pet as a gift
for his son for Christmas and
the first word of the song
played in the credits is
“Christmas." This horror-
comedy tends to skew
towards the laughs but does
have a few dark moments. It
perfectly captures a dosed
small town at Christmas
though that the audience gets
a feel for. It elevates the
movie from a monster movie
at Christmas to a Christmas
movie with monsters.
like all of the movies on
the list, it manages to end on
a happy note with the hope
of a promising future if the
main character continues to
grow. In the end, I think that’s
what definesagood Christmas
movie to me: belief in the
magic of the season by
believing in each other. A
movie can't just have a
decorated tree and be a
Christmas movie; it needs to
have a message of hope that
we can overcome our greed
and be better people, for
oursdves and for each other.
