VETERANS —
Cont. from page 1
riences from their time of service.
It was the main program, how-
ever, that overwhelmed audience
members’ visual and auditory sens-
es with images, stories and music
that celebrated Dublin’s veterans
and the freedom they fought for.
Audience members learned his-
tory, sang, listened to music and
watched images of patriotism, past
wars. Sept. 11 and previous
Veterans Day activities light up the
gymnasium walls in a PowerPoint
presentation.
Weldon Whitehead shared the
history o£ taps and Bobby Phillips
talked about the history of Veterans
Day. After singing the second verse
of the national anthem acappella,
Susan Keith led the crowd in the
well-known, first verse.
Audience members listened
attentively as the long, haunting
notes of taps reverberated through
the gym from the instruments of
high school student Nanci House
and band director Cliff Horn.
Through the entire ceremony,
attending veterans sat in a place of
recognition on the gym floor, sur-
rounded by stands full of students
decked in red, white or blue shirts,
forming a continuum of patriotic
colors around the veterans.
At the ceremony’s close, the
veterans filed out of the gym to the,
sound of the bagpipes played by
Wade Harper, a veteran from
Austin.
“I think a deal like this is a win
for everybody,” said Middle School
Principal John Grimland, who
helped coordinate and sang “God
Bless the USA” for the program.
“We owe.our veterans a ‘thank
you’ and this is a way of doing that.
When you stand in front of the vet-
erans and see the tears in their eyes,
you get a feeling that this did what
you wanted it to do,” he said.
