ditions.
If you are interested in learning
how to take your own soil sam-
ples and send them to the labora-
tory yourself the county agent will
be glad to teach you and give you
the typed instructions. He will
help you take samples if you
think that is necessary. Your vo-
cational agriculture teachers and
the Soil Conscervatian technician.
will also help you with your soil
testing problems.
Fanners who have their soils
tested and then lime and fertilize
according to recommendations will
receive maximum return from
their fertilizer investments.

Harried mothers all too often
forget about this requirement un-
til middle August By then the
Bureau of Vital Statistics is flood-
ed with thousands of similar re-
quests for photostat copies result-
ing in a delay in the receiving of
the copy for two weeks or more.
In efforts to speed up the proc-
ess, the bureau each year hired
extra help and works overtime, in
addition to using certain speed-up
techniques to aid in the locaton
of the original certificates kept on
permanent file at the Department
of Health.
Most of the requests will be for
six-year-old children. Knowing
this, vital statistics personnel ar-
range the record books containing
the 217,470 certificates of birth
for the year 1951 and part of the
“stacks” for 1950 so that access
will be easier and quicker.
The removal and replacement
of the certificates for photostating
is done at the “stacks" by the ex-
tra personnel instead of at the
photostat machine by the techni-
cians in the usual manner.
In this way a staggering pile-up
of record books is avoided and the
issuance of birth certificate photo-
stats is greatly speeded.
State Registrar Don Carrol asks
that requests for photostat copies
be made as soon as possible to
avoid the rush. Contact your local
health department or send the re-
quest to the Bureau of Vital Sta-
tistics, State Health Department,
Austin, Texas.
Be certain to include the child’s
name, name of both parents, and
the date and place of birth. En-
close one dollar ($1.00) with your
request. Cash is requested.
Write tonight to be sure to get
your photostat on time.

This summer is a good time to
lime your acid soils for pastures
and other crops. You can apply at
the ACP office in Kountze for gov-
ernment assistance. Your cost will
be $3,75 per ton of ground lime-
stone spread on your land. The
ACP service is paying the other
$3.50 per ton at present
It is important that soils be test-
ed to determine lime needs since
•oil acidity must be corrected be-
fore maximum returns can be ob-
tained from the fertilizer used.

Operating budget of the Texas
Game and Fish Commission will
be set at the regular meeting of
that group in Austin, Friday, July
26, it has bfen announced by the
executive secretary.
A budget proposal has been pre-
pared by the budget committee,
which takes care of the general
operation. This included a stepped
up operation under anticipated in-
creases in revenue.
“The budget to be adopted next
week, however, will not provide
for much of the new work whigh
can be done until the new funds
begin coming in,” the executive
secretary said.
The general framework for the
operation has been'set up. The
total operating budget for the
1957-58 fiscal year will be approx-
imately 4% million dollars.
The commission also will act on
controls under regulatory power
provided in some $0 Texas coun-
ties. Many of these counties must
also approve the regulations be-
fore they are effective, according
to the executive secretary.

AUSTIN—More than $16,000 in
fee refunds will soon be In the
hands of Texas veterans, Land
Commissioner Karl Rudder slid
Friday.
The fees were collected by the
Veterans' Land Board from ex-
servicemen buying land through
the Veterans' Land Program. Some
transactions were not completed,
but until now fees could not by
law be returned.
Commissioner Rudder recom-
mended to the Legislature during
its last session that the law be
changed to authorize refund of
these fees.
“I want to commend the Legis-
lature for giving the veterans the
just refund of their money,” the
Land Commissioner remarked.
A total of $16,271.80 will be re-
turned to 229 veterans who have
submitted fees since the program
reopened in October, 1955, but
who did not complete their trans-
actions.
This is gin average of $71.06 per
veteran. The largest refund will
be $100, the amount each veteran
must pay in fees. Several will re-
ceive the full amount
Half of the $100 covers dosing
expenses, $25 is appraisal fee, and
$25 is a contract service fee.
The Veterans’ Land Board be-
gan mailing refunds this week.
Most will be mailed within several
weeks, Commissioner Rudder said.
The car had style-years out of date,

Harry’s still smiling, the tears hardly show,
But how he wishes he could get back his dough!
Like a lot of people, Harry was looking for a "good buy” in a new car. But no
car is a bargain if it’s outmoded before you drive it a mile. For the tame money,
Harry could have stepped up to a dashing Swept-Wing Dodge—so new it
actually obtolelee other cars in its field. Obsoletes their high, boxy design with
the low, low look of tomorrow. Obsoletes their old-fashioned features with such
advances as Torsion-Aire Ride, Push-Button TorqueFlite and Total-Contact
Brakes. So don't do what Harry did-please. See your Dodge dealer today.
