OPTOMETRY : The Art ar.d Science, of \ isual Care
Oh, hut I DO have my glasses on!
Today, this is becoming a fairly common statement. Many people
are being fitted with CONTACT lenses, with perfect success, eliminat-
ing heavy spectacles. In many instances, much better vision is achieved
with contacts.
Progress in this field of vision care hat been tremendous even in
the last two years. Use of contacts now may be possible (or you even
if unsuccessful before.
Not all optometrists fit contact lenset. Those who do not will
refer the work to those with special training.

1. Turn wishes into action—
f you dream of being a model
tart to look like one.
2. Look at things as if you’ve
tever seen them before and
tever will again.
3. Invite friends to a party.
4. Reread a favorite book ot
i short story.
5. Think more about your fu-

goal.
6. Seek out someone new to
’alk to—when you’re finding

7. Flirt with a boy you’d like

8. Take a bath deep in bub-

9. Talk to your parents about

10. Get enough sleep.
None of these are easy soltt-

Q. At kids, we were giren n
few drop* of turpentine on
tngnr for rough*. W hat do you
think ot thi*?
A. Years ago this may haw heen
okay but we have better things
today. I his raises another point.
Don’t keep turpentine or anv
would-be harmful material within
reach of children, loddlers are
likely to try anything as the fol-
lowing true story from the New
Yark Poison Center .shows. 1 tucc
children were playing in the
basement and found a can of
turpentine. I hey put some in
glasses. The two older children
only pretendeJ to drink it, but
the 3-year-old swallowed some.
Fortunately, a quick trip to the
hospital for emergency treatment
presented permanent injury. The
only safe rule is to keep beyond
reach anything that youngsters
might conceivably cat, nibble,
chew or swallow.
Q. I hare had three children
and during each pregnancy I
had terere leg cramp*. What
mute* thete pain* and how
can they he prerented?
mA lc
A. l eg cramp during pregnancy
is scry often attributed to a
mineiul imbalance — too litHe-
calcium and too much phospho-
rus. However, Philadelphia doc-
tors recently cast doubt on this
theory. Some expectant mothers
under their care developed leg
cramp regardless of how much
calcium or how little phosphorus
they received. According to these
physicians, all expectant mothers,
cramps or no cramps, should eat
foods that stipplv essential vita-
mins and minerals in daily
amounts recommended by the
National Research Council or
the Canadian Council on Nutri-
tion. \ itamin-mineral capsules or
tablets are used it deemed neces-
sary by the attending physician.
Answers do not necessarily reflect the opinion of all doctors. The diai;-
nosis and treatment of disease is the jinn non of the patient s personal
physician. Questions directed to Science I doors, I’.O. flax a9t>, Madison
