Phi Mu Alpha Holds
Summer Jazz Camp
While most students were away
on vacation, members of Phi Mu
Alpha Sinfonia, national men's
music fraternity, came back to
campus June 6 to help sponsor
the Second Annual Texas Wes-
leyan College Jazz Camp.
This camp was begun in 1970
by Ault Music Company and
PMA. Its basic aim is to promote
the education of music , theory
and performance of jazz music
among high school students.
The attendance at this year's
Thirteen Achieve
Promotions, Tenure
Eleven members of the Texas
Wesleyan College faculty were
honored with promotions, it was
announced by President William
,M. Pearce at the opening faculty
meeting Aug. 23 in the Satellite
Auditorium.
Dr. Pearce also named six re-
cipients of tenure status.
Dr. Alfred Fremder, visiting
professor of composition and pi-
ano. was named professor.
Four members were promoted
from assistant professor to assoc-
iate professor. They are: Dr.
Mary Almore, psychology; Dr.
Ibrahim Salih, political science;
Mason Johnson, speech, and Dr.
Lyle Williams, history.
Five attained Ejfsiir^&ht profes-
sor status. They are: Mrs. Mar-
jorie Bay, English; Noe Flores,
Spanish; Norval. Kne^en, chem-
istry; Stephen Simons, music,
and Arthur Cleveland, biology.
Those granted tenure were: Dr.
Mary Passmore, assistant profes-
sor of education; A1 Peters, in- a
structor in physical education
and coach; Dr. Salih, Cleveland,
Flores and Simons.
camp incldde.d 70 students repre-
senting 18 area high schools.
The faculty was composed of
recognized Ft. Worth area musi-
cians as Lee Pulliam, North Texas
State University 1:00 P.M. Lab
Band; Curtis Wilson, former di-
rector Texas Christian University
Lab Band; and Jack Rumbly,
Casa Manana percussionist.
Dr. James Kincaid, professor
of music education and faculty
advisor to the fraternity, was
camp director. Various members
of PMA acted as hosts, including
Don By bee, assistant camp di-
rector; Kip Woodruff, gpblicity
director; and Rick Eubanks,
dormitory dean.
One of the many highlights
during the week-long camp was
the concert presented by the
Ft. Worth Professional Musicians
Union.
The camp closed on Friday
night with concerts by camp
members broken down into four
bands. At this concert Jim
Smith, manager of Ault Music
Company, presented Dr. Birney
Gross, dean of the College, a
check for $250.00 to be used as a
music scholarship.
In summarizing the success of
the 1971 Jazz Camp, Dr. Kincaid
stated, "We are very grateful
to Ault Music Company for help-
ing Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia spon-
sor ' this camp. As far as we
know, this is the only camp of
this type in the Dallas-Ft. Worth
area. Next year, it is our goal
to draw students from all over
North Texas to this fine camp."
