Board picks interim head
Picking super search firm next on EISD board agenda
Phil Banker
phil@ennisdailynews.com
The Ennis ISD Board of
Trustees chose James Sanders as
the interim superintendent on
Tuesday night and made plans to
select a permanent successor.
The vote was 5-2, with Miles
Strunc and Mack Boyd in oppo-
sition.
Sanders, a Dallas native, was
hired on Aug. 20,2012 as assistant
superintendent of human re-
sources, after spending over a
decade with the Madisonville
school district near College Sta-
tion. He spent 30 years working
in public education after gradu-
ating from Tennessee Temple
University in 1980 in Chat-
James Sanders
tanooga.
He previously worked at Gar-
land Christian Academy as a
teacher and football coach, even-
tually working for the Plano,
Richardson and Mineola school
districts as well.
Sanders said he was pleased
the board chose him to run the
district in the interim.
“I hope I’ve been in the run-
ning since I came here,” he said.
Sanders said his priorities are
maintaining the direction of the
school district and carrying on
its day-to-day functions.
Board President Bramlet
Beard said continuity was the
primary motivator behind
Sanders’ selection.
The board continued prepar-
ing for the search for a perma-
nent new superintendent, as the
board decided to schedule a
meeting to choose a superintend-
ent search firm for 6 p.m. Aug. 20.
Beard said the district has al-
ready received four letters of in-
troduction from search firms
interested in the job.
“We contacted a total of six
search firms two weeks ago,”
Beard said. “These are the hour
that responded.”
Trustee Alan Linson asked for
more options than those cur-
rently available to the board.
“I’d like us to look for more op-
tions than these four,” Linson
said. “One of these four is kind
of pricey”
Boyd agreed, and suggested
the meeting for search firms to
come in person and make their
case before the school board.

Special to the EDN
Ennis ISD participates in the
Region 10 Teacher of the Year
program, which is coordinated
through the Region 10 Education
Service Center. Nominees from
school districts w ithin Region 10
compete for the opportunity to
advance to the State Teacher of
the Year contest.
Each district was allowed a
nominee from an elementary
school and from a secondary
school. This year’s nominees for
EISD were Tara Harvey, life
skills teacher at Travis Elemen-
tary School, and Kelly Boston,
horticulture teacher at Ennis
High School. They were chosen
in a random drawing from
teacher nominations provided
by campus principals.
They attended a Region 10
teacher recognition luncheon
held Aug. 13 in Garland for
teachers who participated in
this program within the region.
Teachers from Rockwall ISD and
Coppell ISD were selected as Re-
gion 10’s representatives in the
state contest.
All regional nominees will be
honored during the Texas
Rangers’ home game this Friday,
Aug. 16.
The Kinzie Award and Region
10 programs are teacher recog-
nition initiatives through the
course of the year that honor
EISD teachers for their work.
United Way shares message with clubs
Phil Banker
phil@ennisdailynews.com
The executive director of the
Greater Ennis United Way con-
tinued raising awareness of this
year's campaign Tuesday at the
Ennis Rotary Club.
Eliza Fulton accepted a $2,000
donation from the club before
talking about how the organiza-
tion plans to expand its fundrais-
ing operations in the coming
campaign. She was set to present
similar information to the Ennis
Lions Club today.
The national United Way or-
ganization mandates that the
local group only solicits money
within zip codes covered by
Ennis ISD, Fulton said.
“The conundrum is how can
you raise more money without
spreading out,” Fulton said.
“The recipe for us is to get more
participation while we're out
there campaigning.”
Fulton said the key is not only
to highlight the participation of
the charity's best givers, but to
emphasize where donated funds
go.
She said the employees of
Ennis ISD frequently top the list
of most funds pledged.
“The school district is one of
our top three givers,” Fulton
said.

Engineers
evaluating
road plan
Nick Todaro
mck@ennisdailynews.com
Freese and Nichols
will take the next few
weeks to evaluate the
city’s road construction
plan so commissioners
will understand costs as
they make decisions on
which streets will see
work in the coming year.
Commissioners gave
their OK last week to task
the engineering firm to
tighten cost estimates for
further evaluation on the
project, which is aimed at
reconstructing about 12
miles of street with as-
phalt overlays at a cost of
about $6 million. City
Manager Steve Howerton
said the project is being
planned for summer 2014
construction, with the
city commission set to
narrow the list of streets
for reconstruction this
fah.
It would take about
three months to do the
necessary engineering
work for the included
streets, barring unfore-
seen complications, How-
erton said, and that
would allow for bid
awards and bond sales in
spring 2014. It would
bring the total of work on
city streets to nearly 20
miles since the 2012 as-
phalt and concrete proj-
ect that repaired or
replaced about seven
miles of city streets.
Planning documentation
shows the city’s working
concept is to sell the
bonds for the 2014 work
and pay them off by 2034
without raising tax rates
to fund repayment.
