“We wish there was
not a need for our center
in Ellis County; but sadly
we all know that child
abuse is not going to dis-
appear over night,” said
Gingerbread House Exec-
utive Director John
Wyckoff. “We encourage
the people of Ellis County
to look, listen and to be-
come aware that we are
all here to protect these
children. The Ginger-
bread House can con-
tinue to make a difference
in our county but we will
continue to need your
help.”
In 2012, the Ellis
County Child Advocacy
Center served more than
850 children and non-of-
fending family members,
conducted 278 forensic in-
terviews, and provided
more than 600 therapy
sessions.
"Ellis County is fortu-
nate to have a facility
such as The Gingerbread
House," said Rep. Jim
Pitts. "The work they do
in our area is invaluable
in assisting abused chil-
dren. I hope everyone will
avail themselves of the
opportunities offered dur-
ing April to become more
cognizant of the impor-
tance of what the Chil-
dren's Advocacy Centers
do across Ellis County
and all of Texas."
Throughout April,
there will be events and
opportunities for the
community to take part
in. Individuals can send
out a story via email, post
something to a Facebook
page, or Tweet a com-
pelling statistic.
A display of blue pin-
wheels in front of the
Gingerbread House
building (located at the
corner of Ross and Farley
streets in Waxahachie)
will represent the 278
children who were inter-
viewed at the center dur-
ing fiscal year 2012. The
inside of the building will
be illuminated in blue.
The center’s annual
open house is set from 3 to
7 p.m. Friday, April 19,
and there will be hot dogs
and refreshments, chil-
dren’s games, giveaways,
face painting and door
prizes.
Construction of a play
therapy room for the
counseling program for
the child abuse victims
and their non-offending
family members is under
way; production also has
begun for a new DVD
presentation about the
center and what it pro-
vides to the community
Other events in April
include the first Charity
Bull Shoot Dart Tourna-
ment benefiting the cen-
ter, slated for Saturday,
April 13, at the Waxa-
hachie VFW Lodge. Con-

cycle Club XXI’s third an-
nual Golf Scramble
benefiting the center is
scheduled for Monday,
April 29, at the Brickyard
Golf Course in Ferris.

“I believe our public of-
ficials need to be avail-
able,” said Dan Davis,
Ellis County GOP chair-
man. “I think to vote
working people out of
being able to come to
council is inappropriate,
at best.”
Davis said the commis-
sioners’ stated reason that
not enough citizens come
to court meetings to merit
having them in the
evening is not a good
enough reason to move
them.
“If there’s no pressing
issue, there’s no reason to
watch for the fun of it,”
Davis said. “Regardless if
anyone shows up, you’ve
got to make yourself
available to the people you
represent.”
The Ellis County GOP
last censured the court on
Dec. 7, 2011 over budget
hikes that year. One of the
court members censured,
Heath Sims, was later de-
feated in a primary elec-
tion by Perry
“I really think the com-
missioners should re-
think what they’re doing,”
Davis said. “I don’t think
it speaks well to their atti-
tude toward their con-
stituents.”
