Help -1 need a support group
Well, it happened again. I
went into the grocery store
to buy just one or two items
and walked out with a cart-
ful.
I think I need a support
group. You see, it’s not my
fault. It’s those blasted
money-saving coupons.
They call to me. “Look, save
$3 on calcium tablets.”
Hmmm, after the coupon,
I’ll only pay 75 cents a jar.
That’s such a good deal I’ll
buy five! Too bad no one in
my house takes calcium sup-
plements.
It’s a disease I tell you. I
know I am not the only one
who can’t pass up a great
buy. Look around the store
sometime and you’ll see
other coupon addicts busily
scouting the aisles for those
little yellow tantalizing
pieces of paper offering
great savings if you buy this
product. They won’t make
eye contact, though. Not
because they are ashamed,
mind you, it’s because they
are so deeply engrossed in
calculating how much they
are going to save on this
shopping trip.
I began clipping coupons
when my kids were little as a
means to stretch my grocery
budget. It became a game of
sorts, trying to see how
Chris
Lundstrom
much I could save. Armed
with an envelope stuffed full
of coupons for cereal, mac
and cheese and shampoo, I
was able to buy what my
family needed and some of
what they actually wanted.
Diaper coupons were pre-
mium, worth their weight in
gold when you have two
kids that aren’t potty-
trained. Yes, those were the
days - exchanging coupons
with friends, bartering two
50-cent coupons for sand-
wich bags for one $ 1 coupon
for trash bags. Ahh, the
memories.
There’s even a show on
television now - Extreme
Couponing - that follows
these women around when
they make their shopping
trip. One devoted clipper got
more than $600 worth of
groceries for $6. Of course,
that family was going to live
off of mustard, paper towels
and toilet bowl cleaner for
the next few weeks!
I don’t know about the
rest of you, but where do
they put all that stuff? Most
homes have adequate
kitchen storage for a normal
family. Some are lucky to
have pantries. My small
pantry couldn’t hold that
much even if it was empty to
begin with.
I knew I had a problem
when I opened my pantry
door after one trip for just a
few items and found no
more room. The freezer is
also packed. Of course it
doesn’t help that my kids are
all finally out of the house so
it is just me and honey. Just
the two of us. And all that
food. Sigh.
When the kids first left for
college, they would “shop at
home” on the weekends they
came home. I’d catch them
with bags of canned goods
and an ice chest packed to
the top from my freezer.
They seem to have settled in
more, because there aren’t as
many trips home and when
then do come home they may
only take a few items back.
So why do I keep buying?
There was a news story on
television this past week that
said researchers in Japan
have found that shopping is
actually good for you. Don’t
these guys have anything
better to do? After all, they
did just have a couple of
earthquakes, a tsunami and
near nuclear meltdown. And
they are researching the
effects of shopping?
For most of us, shopping
makes us feel good.
A growing body of brain
research shows how shop-
ping activates key areas of
the brain, boosting our mood
and making us feel better -
at least for a little while.
It was interesting though
and maybe explains my
problem. Allow me to play
amateur psychologist for a
bit. Perhaps I shop for bar-
gains because it makes me
happy - and perhaps not
miss my kids so much.
Anyway, the only solution
is for me to stay out of the
grocery store for a bit. So
hopefully I have stocked up
enough on the perishables
that are the root of my prob-
lem - milk, bread and fresh
veggies. Otherwise I’ll be
making a quick trip in and a
long trip out once again.
Another solution would be
to use one of the empty bed-
rooms as a large pantry. That
way I could at least brag that
I was organized.
I can already see the title
for the next reality show on
The Learning Channel -
Extreme Food Hoarders.
Hopefully they won’t call
me.
